‘Goonies’ Star Jeff Cohen Celebrates Ke Huy Quan’s Major Milestone 41 Years Later: ‘My Brother’

In 1985, Jeff Cohen and Ke Huy Quan went searching for One-Eyed Willy’s treasure together as Chunk and Data in The Goonies. More than four decades later, Cohen is celebrating another kind of treasure for his longtime friend.

Cohen took to Facebook to congratulate Quan after the actor’s new memoir “Never Say Die” landed on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

“From the Goondocks to the Oscars to the New York Times Bestsellers List,” Cohen wrote. “Please join me in congratulating my Brother, Ke Huy Quan!”

included a trip down memory lane, with photos of Cohen and Quan clinging to each other as Chunk and Data in The Goonies, pictures of the longtime friends together as adults and an image of Quan’s new memoir.

“Never Say Die,” released Sept. 15 by Grand Central Publishing, debuted at No. 15 on the New York Times hardcover nonfiction list dated Oct. 4.

The memoir chronicles Quan’s remarkable journey from his childhood as a refugee to becoming one of the most recognizable young actors of the 1980s, followed by decades away from acting and an eventual Hollywood comeback that culminated in an Academy Award.

Quan first broke through as Short Round opposite Harrison Ford in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The following year, he played gadget-loving Data in The Goonies, alongside Cohen’s Chunk, Sean Astin’s Mikey, Corey Feldman’s Mouth and Josh Brolin’s Brand.

The friendships Quan made while filming The Goonies have lasted much longer than the five months the young cast spent making the movie.

In fact, Cohen and Quan’s relationship eventually took on an unexpected professional dimension. Cohen left acting and became an entertainment lawyer, and years later, he helped negotiate Quan’s deal to star in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

That movie completed one of Hollywood’s most memorable comeback stories. Quan won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2023 for his performance as Waymond Wang, and Cohen was sitting in the audience when his childhood co-star accepted the award.

Quan even thanked him from the Oscars stage, calling Cohen his “Goonies brother for life.”

The affection apparently goes both ways.

Fans loved seeing Cohen celebrate another chapter in Quan’s story, particularly alongside photos showing just how far the two former child stars have come.

“Holy moly! So proud of Ke AND you!!” one person commented.

“Love that you all keep in touch still,” wrote another.

“You guys are the best! Wishing you joy and success!” another fan added.

And one commenter kept things appropriately Goonies-themed, writing, “Congrats Data!! ?‍☠️ ? ??.”
