The Wife’s car has a bum headlight. The good news is that I’ve changed the other bulb once before, so I know how to do it; the bad news is that I only bought one bulb, like an idiot. So I have to go get a second one, instead of just buying a set of two in the first place. Real genius move, Past Brett.
Without that first inning wildness, Matthew Boyd’s start might’ve been fine. He was charged with just one run after that, and it was an inherited runner that scored. But it all counts, and when you’re missing with the fastball as much as he was in the first, you’re going to (1) give up walks, (2) give up hard contact, and (3) go deeper into counts and use up a lot of pitches. Boyd needed nearly 30 pitches to get through the first inning, and that set him up for a very short night. Plus, that first inning yielded three runs for the Padres in a game they ultimately won by two. Phil Maton gave up two of those runs, himself, and it was hard to say it was a relief to see him back after his knee tendinitis sojourn – which has to have been at least a little bit about trying to get his mechanics and velocity back. No dice on the velocity, which was still massively down from last year (his base cutter sat 90.6 mph last year, and this year it’s barely scraping 89 mph). The cutter is dropping much more than last year, too, making it move a whole lot more like a standard-issue cutter than something weird like he was throwing last year. Even if I could talk myself into pointing out that Maton was getting groundballs last night that found their way into being hits, they were all hit hard. He got five whiffs and struck out two, but it took 28 pitches to find those 5 whiffs (more good than great, and again, that requires you to ignore the hits). I think he’s still got a lot to figure out and get right, and I hope that he can do it even as a 33-year-old with a knee issue. The GOOD version of Maton is someone the Cubs really need. How much does it suck that Riley Martin finally got a shot in the big leagues, actually broke through and looked like a key piece of the bullpen, and immediately suffered a flexor strain and will miss multiple months? Go back in time and tell yourself in March that you’re going to be crushed by the loss of Riley Martin in April, and although you’d surmise it means a great compliment for Martin, it would also mean things have been a disaster in the bullpen. Just have to keep finding new guys to contribute. And have to get Caleb Thielbar, Hunter Harvey, and Daniel Palencia healthy. Then it becomes a question of, "Why are you out in front? Are you not recognizing it or are you not mechanically able to stay back with recognition?" Dansby talked about the latter 2 years ago.
