Victor Wembanyama Makes NBA History TWICE, Named Defensive Player of the Year

San Antonio Spurs superstar center Victor Wembanyama has enjoyed quite a 24-hour run.

Last night, the 22-year-old Frenchman broke franchise history by besting a longstanding Tim Duncan record when he scored the most points ever for a Spurs player in a playoff debut. He notched 35 points in a 111-98 Game 1 first-round victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. In fairness, the game is far faster now than it was in Duncan’s 1997-98 rookie season, meaning teams (and, thus, players) get way more possessions in 2025-26.

Per the NBA, Wembanyama has now been named the league’s 2026 Defensive Player of the Year this afternoon, in just his third season.

Shams Charania of ESPN reports that Wembanyama is both the youngest player ever AND the first unanimous DPOY honoree.
