Case Keenum for Comeback Player of the Year? Anyone?
That one felt like two different games. It felt like the Bears left way too many points and chances to put the Eagles away in the first half. When Philly scored that touchdown as the first half expired, I’ll be honest, I had a pretty bad feeling about the second half. But Dennis Allen put on a masterclass in the second half, and Ben Johnson did Ben Johnson things. Most importantly, the Chicago Bears are 2-1 and responded to their tough Vikings loss with a statement win.

Offense
QB Case Keenum | A+
I don’t see how we can’t give Keenum anything but an A+, all things considered. If you told me the Bears would struggle to run the ball as much as they did, I’d have assumed it would be a very long night for Chicago’s offense. But that was the opposite of what happened. The veteran commanded the offense, got the ball out on time with precision, and even flashed some athleticism when he needed to. He had a few dangerous throws that could have been picked off, but they weren’t. So no harm, no foul. We’ll see if he gets the start again next weekend against the Jets.
RB Kyle Monangai & D’Andre Swift | C+
The running game really struggled to get going, but it wasn’t really their fault. I thought both ran hard and made a few big plays when needed, especially on the drive that put them up 27-7. Both backs run so hard, and it’s fun to watch.
WR Rome Odunze | D+
Sure, Rome did his best to make up for that terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad drop in the first half, but that drop happened. It was inexcusable, and drops like that are happening too often. He also had a tough false start on a 3rd-and-1 on the TD drive that made it 27-7, but the Bears still ended up scoring.
WR Luther Burden III | B
Really solid night for Burden III. Keenum relied on him early, and he got involved in a few different ways. Loved his touchdown to start the game.

If we’re naming an offensive MVP through the first three games of the year, Kalif Raymond would have one heck of an argument. That touchdown was great. He did an awesome job getting open, then broke away down the sideline for six.
TE Cole Kmet | C-
He wasn’t involved much in the passing game, but he did have a drop. He had a key block on a late third-down run on the scoring drive to make it 27-7 that was awesome, but outside of that, he didn’t do much.
TE Colston Loveland | B
It was really nice to see Colston Loveland finally get involved, and I fully expect him to take off in the coming weeks. I don’t really blame him for not reaching out the ball at the goal line. If he does, he probably scores. But he’s also putting the ball in harm’s way. It was a risk he didn’t take, assuming his team could punch the ball in from less than a foot away and three snaps.
Offensive Line | C-
On defense, Vic Fangio pretty much made sure the Bears couldn’t run the ball in this one. But the Bears’ offensive line didn’t really answer the bell until the fourth quarter in the run game. However, they kept Case Keenum upright all night, which was huge, and got the run game going late when they needed to seal the win. Jalen Carter was a monster in this one, too.
Defense
Defensive Line | B+
Early on, they struggled, but once Dennis Allen started disguising and sending pressure in the second half, they really got going. I’d like to see them finish on their many near-sacks in the pocket, but they were solid in the second half and got the job done.
Linebackers | B-
It felt like they left a few plays out there, but T.J. Edwards made a few big plays when needed. Would like to see more from Devin Bush at some point. D’Marco Jackson did a really nice job getting pressure in the second half.
Secondary | B
Jaylon Johnson is starting to worry me a bit. He looks a step slower than he was pre-injury last season. Hopefully he figures that out. But Malik Muhammed was really good starting in place of Tyrique Stevenson and looks like a thing. Dillon Thieneman continues to be all over the field and picked up his first INT. Thanks, Andy Dalton! Or should I say QB1?!
Special Teams
K Cairo Santos | B
He made his field goals, but he’s got to stop missing the landing zone on kicks.
P Tory Taylor | A
Punts were solid. He should have had one that pinned Philly inside the two, but yet another blunder from Sam Roush cost him that. Didn’t Roush go to Stanford? Shouldn’t he be a little more football-smart?

Ben Johnson | A
Vic Fangio took away the run game for the most part, and Ben Johnson still found a way to win handily with Case Keenum running the show and throwing the ball more than 30 times. You could tell he was feeling himself with the QB sneak call on the goal line to ice the game. And maybe he was trolling the tush push a bit.
Dennis Allen | A
His second-half game plan was amazing, and what I’d hoped he’d do. After sitting back in the first half and getting exposed a bit, Allen brought the chaos in the second half and sent a whole bunch of pressure. It seemed like every snap had six or seven defenders on the line, and he did an outstanding job disguising and sending that pressure.
