At the risk of taking away well-deserved credit from Keenum, who turned in a career night, getting a quarterback who hasn’t played in three years ready in a week, and that quarterback completing 24-of-34 for 247 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions is a testament to the coach as much as the quarterback. Keenum said the same after the game while speaking with ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt, saying he wasn’t sure about some of the plays Johnson had on the opening script, and that he scratched his head a bit during their meeting on Sunday evening.

Keenum said that Johnson was in his bag. He certainly was. Seven different receivers registered catches on Monday night. Luther Burden III caught seven passes for 61 yards and a touchdown. Colston Loveland, who came into Monday with his face on the back of a milk carton, caught four passes for 31 yards. The savvy veteran Kalif Raymond remained a key cog in this offense, catching six passes for 90 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown pass.

Wizardry in the passing game was on display, and even when his rushing game wasn’t working, Johnson kept calling the numbers of D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai. Despite slow starts, Swift finished with 84 yards on 20 carries, and Monangai finished with 31 yards on 10 carries. Things loosened up at the end, but the commitment to the rushing attack kept Fangio’s defense honest enough to keep giving Keenum room to make plays throughout the game.

But make no mistake, Case Keenum played his tail off.

I highlighted multiple passes under pressure and off the back foot in my notes. Keenum made the plays in front of him, the easy ones, and then some. He also showed his veteran prowess by drawing a timely offside and then fooling Philadelphia’s defensive line on the goal line, leading to an easy dive across the goal line for the touchdown that sealed the deal.

My hat goes off to Keenum. But this was a Ben Johnson masterclass.

But Johnson wasn’t alone in putting on a master class tonight. Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen was in his bag, too.

The Bears Defense Answered the Call

Remember when Chicago allowed 37 points to the Carolina Panthers? They’ve allowed 16 in the two games since. Combined. Three field goals to the Vikings and one touchdown to the Eagles.

Fangio’s defense looked primed to bend, if not break early, but he dug deep, gave the Eagles chaotic looks, sent pressure, and his unit stepped up in a big way, forcing three takeaways on the evening. Does this game end the way it does if Allen’s defense doesn’t force three straight three-and-outs to open the second half, which the Bears converted into 10 points? How about the T.J. Edwards interception on the next drive for the Eagles after they themselves forced the first Bears three-and-out of the evening?

After Allen’s defense generated a trio of three-and-outs and a takeaway, Chicago’s offense ended things. On fourth down, Keenum’s hard count drew the Eagles offside, giving Chicago a new set of downs. Monangai began to find some positive runs. An Andrew Mukuba penalty in the secondary on a third down helped set up Keenum’s icing quarterback sneak over the goal line to make it 27-7 Bears.

By the way, look at the false pull of the guards to confuse the Eagles interior, clearning a lane for Keenum… yeah, Johnson was indeed in his bag tonight.

Save for one drive at the end of the first half for Philadelphia, the Chicago Bears dominated this game. Even on the Eagles’ previous near-scoring drive, rookie Dillon Thieneman came up with a huge interception in the back of the end zone.

Ben Johnson had a down day last week, but he doesn’t owe anyone anything. He’s done enough to prove his prowess, and tonight was another reminder. One day, people are going to smarten up and learn to stop doubting this man.
