Bruno Fernandes registered yet another assist as Manchester United strengthened their grip on Champions League qualification with a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
It was United’s first away victory against Chelsea in over five years, and once again Fernandes was at the centre of it. His 18th Premier League assist of the season set up Matheus Cunha’s decisive goal, and it leaves the Portuguese playmaker just two short of the seasonal record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The win moves United 10 points clear of Chelsea in sixth place. With the top five qualifying for next season’s Champions League, that gap now looks close to insurmountable.
For long periods, the first half drifted without a breakthrough. But with Fernandes on the pitch, anything can happen.
Just before the interval, he shrugged off former teammate Alejandro Garnacho, surged down the right and cut the ball back for Cunha, who finished first time past Robert Sánchez with United’s first shot on target.
It was a moment of real quality in an otherwise subdued opening period and yet another piece of evidence of Fernandes’ ability to spark games into life.
Cunha, meanwhile, now has more Premier League goals against Chelsea than any other opponent (5).
Chelsea then dominated the second half. Pedro Neto was central to their threat, delivering multiple dangerous crosses into the box. Liam Delap came closest, rising well to meet a Neto delivery only to see his header rebound off the woodwork. Moments later, Chelsea were denied in similar fashion; another Neto cross caused problems and Noussair Mazraoui headed onto his own bar.
Overall, Chelsea attempted 15 shots to United’s two after the interval and finished with 21 efforts overall, their second-highest total in a Premier League match this season. Yet they generated just 1.55 expected goals, or 0.07 per shot, which shows they lacked clear-cut opportunities. Many of their attempts came from distance or difficult angles following crosses.
United, despite fielding a makeshift defence that included Mazraoui at centre-back and 19-year-old debutant Arydan Heaven, stood firm.
For Chelsea, after a promising start under Liam Rosenior, they have now lost four consecutive league matches without scoring for the first time since February to March 1998.
Progress had seemed quite clear. Now, it’s harder to see.
