Patrick Clancy opened up about the moments of grief he still carries every day in his first interview since ex-wife Lindsay Clancy’s trial, from holding their youngest son in his final moments to breaking down alone on Fifth Avenue.
Speaking with Ross Douthat on Sunday, September 20, on 60 Minutes, Patrick, 38, shared deeply personal memories of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, while revealing how he survived some of his darkest days and slowly began rebuilding his life.

After Callan’s heartbeat was restored, Patrick desperately held on to hope. “Just gimme one. Just gimme one kid, and I would raise him as best I could, and I would give him the best life I possibly could. I’d tell him about his brother and sister,” he recalled thinking.
Callan survived for four days. “I’m so grateful for those four days that I had with him. And I’m so grateful he hung on,” Patrick said. His final memory of his son was even harder to recount. “I said, ‘I’m so sorry.’ And I got to– I got to hold him. I got to lay down next to him. And he died in my arms.”
How Dark Did Patrick Clancy’s Grief Become?
Patrick said life came to a “screeching halt” afterward. One day, without thinking, he drove past his children’s school during drop-off. “I was just– I couldn’t be there anymore,” he said.
Asked whether he had experienced suicidal thoughts, Patrick said, “Yeah, there was a time where I– I didn’t think I would live to see my 35th birthday. And I was completely fine with it.”
The grief followed him into Lindsay’s trial. Before jurors heard the 911 call, Patrick suffered what he called a “massive traumatic panic attack.” His heart was “pounding,” but he declined medication and returned to finish testifying.
How Did Patrick Clancy Mark Son Callan’s First Birthday Months After His Death?
Patrick eventually left Duxbury for New York City. Five weeks after moving, he faced what would have been Callan’s first birthday. He went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, lit a candle and told his son, “I love you, buddy.” He then walked onto Fifth Avenue and began “crying my eyes out.”
“And nobody cared,” Patrick recalled.
Instead of making him feel more alone, the anonymity brought relief. “This is where I need to be. I can grieve,” he said. His children remain present in his Manhattan apartment through keepsakes, including Cora’s stuffed sloth, a photo of Callan wearing a bow tie, and Dawson’s well-loved toy helicopter. Patrick also said he dreams about them “all the time.”

Patrick met fertility doctor Rachel Danis, 37, through a New York running club in January 2024. The couple later married. Patrick told Douthat his life had changed “in such a positive way” since meeting Rachel.
Rachel said she tries to help him carry what he has lived through. “I know I can’t fix– I can’t bring his kids back. But if I can honor them and allow Pat to grieve but also just continue to honor them in the present, it– I guess that’s all I can do.”
The couple also confirmed they are starting a family. “I think every parent can agree, you have different relationships with your kids, but they’re all your kids,” Patrick said. “And I can’t wait to tell them about their brothers and sister.”
Lindsay’s trial ended in a mistrial on September 4 after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict, leaving the possibility of another trial unresolved.
