The author behind The Notebook voted in a giant poll of the century’s best TV shows, and one of his picks is not a love story.
The New York Times asked more than 500 stars, showrunners and other TV insiders to vote for the 10 best series that premiered since Jan. 1, 2000. The paper started revealing the results on Sunday night, Sept. 20, with Nos. 100 through 81, and it will name No. 1 on Friday. For many of the shows, the Times also named a famous voter who picked it.
From The Notebook to Dexter
Nicholas Sparks voted for Dexter, which landed at No. 88. The Showtime drama ran from 2006 to 2013 and starred Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, a police forensics investigator who secretly killed violent criminals who had escaped justice.
That is a long way from The Notebook, the Sparks debut that hit the Times best-seller list in its first week back in 1996. Dexter Morgan’s story is not over, either. Paramount+ released first-look photos from Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection in July.
Elisabeth Moss and Jeff Probst
Elisabeth Moss, who starred in The Handmaid’s Tale, voted for House, which came in at No. 95. Hugh Laurie played Dr. Gregory House, a cold, pill-popping diagnostician who only cared about a case if it interested him. The medical drama ran from 2004 to 2012.
Survivor host Jeff Probst voted for Eastbound & Down, No. 90 on the list. Danny McBride starred in the HBO comedy as Kenny Powers, a washed-up former Major League pitcher, from 2009 to 2013.
