The names. They just kept adding up as I thought about injured Cubs pitchers that needed checking in on …
On the brighter side of the updating, Matthew Boyd is pitching today for the Iowa Cubs for his rehab outing, and it’s gone well so far. I expect a relatively brief appearance for Boyd, who hasn’t been down too long with the biceps strain, and who could then return to the Cubs’ rotation the next time through if he comes out of today feeling fine.
Meanwhile, no new update on Justin Steele since last week, when Carter Hawkins indicated the lefty was still on track for a late-May, early-June return following surgery last year. Nothing new is generally good news on this one, because you just want Steele to return fully healthy and fully ready to go (more for the second half and the postseason, ideally).
Cade Horton‘s elbow surgery is reportedly today. It’ll either be an internal brace procedure or a full-on second Tommy John surgery, and the doctor won’t know for sure what’s needed until he gets in there. Either way, to be emotionally safe, I wouldn’t expect to see Horton back until mid-2027. Let’s just hope the procedure goes smoothly. (Ditto Porter Hodge, whose surgery is next week.)
Jordan Wicks, who’s been out since Spring Training with elbow inflammation, is scheduled to pitch on Saturday for the Iowa Cubs. Hopefully his return goes smoothly, because it would definitely be nice to have him available in the mix sooner rather than later.
Hunter Harvey‘s triceps inflammation is not going to be a minimum IL stint, according to Craig Counsell, who says Harvey is still in a strengthening mode (Sun-Times).
Phil Maton (knee inflammation) is getting better and expected to throw off the mound next week (Tribune). From there, it’s just a matter of when he looks physically ready to return, and recovers quickly enough between throwing sessions to be activated.
Trent Thornton and Kyle Wright were both signed knowing that they’d still be in rehab mode when the season started. Thornton is close to getting sent to Iowa for the next steps in his return from last year’s Achilles injury, and Kyle Wright is making simulated starts in Arizona right now as he ramps up from a shoulder injury (Tribune).
Jaxon Wiggins (elbow inflammation) has officially moved to the IL at Iowa, which is somewhat procedural – he was shut down anyway and the I-Cubs probably need a roster spot at some point – but it does mean his return start won’t be any time soon. “Let’s make sure these guys can get healthy,” Jed Hoyer said, per Cubs.com. “Because if they’re playing catch-up in April, it’s going to get bad in May, June. There’s no way to push through things in April and get right. So, sometimes, early in the year, you have to realize that and play the long game. With Wiggins, obviously he hasn’t gotten back to a place of doing his throwing program. Once he’s asymptomatic, we’ll do that. But we’re not going to push him in the meantime.”
In other words, Wiggins isn’t even throwing yet, because he’s still feeling something in the elbow. I’m not saying we need to be panicked, but obviously – as is so often the case, especially with minor league pitchers – the original descriptions of the issue may not have been overly forthcoming. Still, the Cubs were going to have to limit Wiggins’ innings this year in any case, and he was never a lock to come up and contribute in the bigs. It’s possible this injury/soreness/whatever is not impacting any timelines whatsoever. But I still won’t feel great about it until he’s actually back on the mound.
