The Chicago Bulls face a major franchise turning point this offseason.
It’s not totally fair to predict how our Bulls will handle their offseason business, given that we don’t yet know (a) the identities of our next team president and general manager or (b) whether or not Billy Donovan will even stick around as the team’s head coach.
Over anything else, those decisions hover over the club’s team-building decisions. But Chicago also boasts a boatload of cap space, between three and four draft picks, and multiple vets on movable contracts.
It’s quite possible that very few of the pieces who wrapped up our season with a 149-128 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday will still be rostered by the Bulls come July.

Will the Bulls opt to retain any of these veterans slated to come off their books?
It would behoove the team to at least give Miller an extended look — his $2.4 million club option is fairly noninvasive, and the 22-year-old has shown plenty of explosiveness and upside logging extended minutes in the Windy City after the trade deadline.
Simons, Sexton, Collins and Richards are all eligible for contract extensions through June 30, although that feels unlikely. Miller will be eligible for an extension if the Bulls exercise his team option, while Okoro becomes extension-eligible on Sept. 17.
Guaranteed Contracts

As of this writing, the Bulls sport just eight guaranteed contracts for 2026-27.
Wing Isaac Okoro, power forward Jalen Smith and point guard Tre Jones are all on appealing deals if a new front office wants to move on from any of those talented, middle-aged vets.
Spending Outlook
Per Spotrac, the Bulls should have $59.6 million available in cap space this summer — excluding cap holds.
Given how far away this club is from contention, it seems unlikely that Chicago would even succeed at, say, signing one of the top-tier unrestricted free agents (Austin Reaves, Trae Young, Norman Powell, James Harden or LeBron James) to a maximum deal.
Upcoming & Future Draft Picks
This week, all Bulls fans should be Portland Trail Blazers fans. That’s because Portland’s first-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft will convey to Chicago, should it fall outside the lottery. That means the Trail Blazers will need to qualify for the playoffs proper.
The No. 8-seeded Trail Blazers will have two opportunities to advance. First, they’ll try to down the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference’s 7/8 play-in matchup Tuesday. Should Portland lose, the team will have another chance to move on, playing the victor of Wednesday’s 9/10 clash between the LA Clippers and the Golden State Warriors.
Let’s run through all of Chicago’s future draft selections. Check out all those, uh, second-rounders.
