Five-time champions, Mumbai Indians (MI) are having a dismal season in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 as they registered their third straight defeat in match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium on April 12. While the former champions broke the long-standing jinx of losing their campaign opener this year, they were handed 18-run defeat at the hands of RCB. Following the tough loss, their skipper Hardik Pandya gave a brutal reality check during their dressing room interaction. The Indian and MI all-rounder put only two options for the team to come out of the series of loss while addressing the squad. The 32-year-old echoed the statement previously said by head coach Mahela Jayawardene, informing the players either to choose their individual space or come together to embrace these losses.
“Thinking from what MJ said, I think here there are two options we can do. One is go back in our rooms, go back into our cocoon spaces and try to figure it out. I know it’s tough losing but let’s learn… let’s not get disappeared. But let’s learn. It’s always winning and learning, never losing. So let’s do that. That’s something which tonight after the game, once we go back to hotel, let’s have a meal together, we’ll talk about cricket. We’ll talk about something else but we’ll figure it out,” he said.

His statement came on similar lines to his post-match address, where he expressed disappointment at the bowling unit while admitting the changes. “I think we conceded way too many runs. I think that (241-run target) was always going to be catch-up. I think in the last couple of games, as a bowling unit or even as a batting unit, we’ve been quite catching up in the game rather than leading the game. We really need to reflect, really need to see what best we can do and how we can get that momentum and that click which we require,” Hardik had said.
Following the series of defeats, MI currently sit in 8th place with only two points to their name. They will be looking to come back together, strongly and put up a fight when they host Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match 24 of IPL 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
