Willson Contreras Is Taking Out His Fury on His Brother’s Brewers Tonight

When it comes to Willson Contreras, almost all of us Cubs fans are hypocrites … and unapologetic ones, at that. By which I mean, when Contreras was on our team, a lot of us loved when he’d get all steamed up and ticked off, trolling other fan bases and just being a general menace on the field. The way he’d be just visibly fuming and hard-nosed about it the rest of the game was, I don’t know … fun, I guess. But that only applied to CUBS Willson Contreras.

When he became CARDINALS Willson Contreras … yeah, that sh*t got old fast. Like I said, hypocrites.

Maybe you don’t remember, but Willson Contreras turned full heel after he skipped town, calling the Cardinals the better organization/city and actively soliciting boos at Wrigley Field. It was annoying, but also … all in good fun. That’s just what you do. He enjoyed being hated, and we enjoyed hating him right back.

Well, now that he’s not on the Cardinals anymore, I have a little less trouble rooting for him and enjoying his antics again … especially when he turns that fiery gaze to the Brewers … a team I actually now hate much more than the Cardinals (yeah, they live rent-free in my mind, and it’s gonna stay that way until we beat them in something meaningful … get over it).

Such as it was tonight, when he was hit by a Corbin Burnes pitch for what was apparently the sixth time in his career.

Willson Contreras Is Not Happy with the Brewers

To be fair, he was barely grazed, but it was up-and-in, and guys don’t like that. Plus, if you keep getting hit by the same guy, eventually, you’re going to get ticked off. I do get that.

Anyway, after making a big production of his fury and bewilderment, Contreras took his sweet time walking down the first base line, escorted (funnily enough) by his own brother, Brewers catcher William Contreras (the family group chat tonight is gonna be popping off).

That’s when Brewers manager Pat Murphy jogged out of the dugout to voice his frustration with Contreras, even questioning if he was hit at all (he was) with a challenge. And that sent Willson Contreras over the top.

Around the one-minute mark (video below), you can see Contreras just running his mouth in the Brewers’ general direction, with at least some of it directed towards the umpire and the rest for Pat Murphy, maybe? His own coaches had to reel him back in.

    But it didn’t end there.

On the very next play, Willson Contreras slid hard into Brewers second baseman Brice Turang. Well, I mean, it’s not that hard of a slide in 2006. But in 2026, it’s about the most you can get away with without being fined or suspended.

Turang even hunches over in pain and is tended to by the umpire.

I don’t know. Like I said, that slide doesn’t really seem THAT dirty, but his intentions certainly were transparent. You can tell by how late his slide was and, well, just his general body language.

Again, 20 years ago, no one would have even thought twice about that play, but it’s about the most aggressive slide into second you’ll see nowadays.

Anyway, that brought Pat Murphy out AGAIN, and there Willson Contreras was, sitting on the top step, like The Beast in the Sandlot, just WAITING for his opportunity to get back into the action.

Anyway, fun stuff. But it may be the Brewers who get the last laugh, as they now lead the Red Sox 7-5 in the top of the 8th inning, because life is awful and we don’t deserve nice things.
