2026 JAPANESE SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Saturday, October 10th – Monday, October 12th Saga Prefecture SCM (25m) Qualifying Competition for SC World Championships SwimSwam Preview Entries Live Results Day 1 Recap

Day two of the 2026 Japanese Short Course Championships saw Tomoyuki Matsushita rip a new World Record in the men’s 400mIM, with the 21-year-old firing off a time of 3:54.33.

That effort overwrote the former World Record of 3:54.81 set by fellow Japanese Olympic medalist Daiya Seto during the 2019 International Swimming League (ISL) season. You can read more about Matsushita’s monster performance here.

There were additional domestic record-breaking swims on the night, however, including in the men’s 50m breaststroke.

Taku Taniguchi stopped the clock at a speedy result of 25.43 to grab the gold, posting the sole time of the field under the 26-second barrier in the process.

His time this evening handily erased his own former Japanese national record of 25.88 he put on the books earlier this year and rendered him the 8th-fastest man in history.

Yamato Okadome, NCAA champion for the Cal Bears, turned in a time of 26.06 to earn the silver, while World Junior Record holder Yusei Imaizumi touched in a time of 26.09. Imaizumi’s outing checked in as a new National High School Record as a follow-up to the 100m breast WJR he set on night one of the competition.

The men’s 100m free saw World Championships medalist Tatsuya Murasa get to the wall in a time of 46.27 to beat the pack by over half a second.

Murasa, who has had more success in the 200m free individually, held off Katsuhiro Matsumoto, who settled for silver in 46.73, with Tatsumi Scott hitting 47.33 to round out the podium.

Murasa’s effort notched a new University Record in the event.

Kotomi Kato already set a new Japanese national record en route to winning last night’s women’s 100m breaststroke event and she doubled up with gold in the 50m breast.

Kato posted a winning result of 29.79 as the only swimmer to delve under the 30-second barrier, establishing a new University Record in the process.

Chihiro Saito nabbed runner-up honors in 30.43, as Hiroko Makino touched in 30.50 for the bronze medal.
