Tyson Bagent Stumbles In His Biggest Test, But At Least Caleb Williams Is ‘On Track’

Let’s be clear from the jump. The Bears’ loss doesn’t fall solely on the shoulders of Tyson Bagent. As someone who believes in the “win as a team, lose as a team” mantra, I came away from Sunday’s shellacking by the Packers feeling like everyone across the board floundered. Offense. Defense. Special teams. Coaching. It was a thorough beating and a humbling defeat.

That said, Bagent was a problem—a big one. And we shouldn’t talk around it.

This was a reality check game for Tyson Bagent. His flaws were exposed. His strengths were mitigated. And the Bears failed to get anything going on offense because of it. Bagent’s deficiencies made it easy for the Packers’ defenders to lock in on Sunday. Couple that with Bagent being a tick slow on the decision-making, and it made for a rough afternoon.

Two sacks, two interceptions, at least a half-dozen hits taken, and a handful of pass breakups can be chalked up to Green Bay knowing the quarterback and his limitations. Bagent was bad. But the Packers deserve credit for stifling Bagent and the Bears offense.

This could have been a statement game for Tyson Bagent. Going on the road, making some winning plays, and beating the Packers would have been fun for fans and a résumé-builder for Bagent. Instead, we got none of it. Things were so bad that fans (myself included) wondered why Case Keenum didn’t come in earlier. Others are questioning why Keenum didn’t start in the first place. Some are even pondering if Bagent should be QB2 when Caleb Williams returns to the starting lineup. It was a damning performance for Bagent, who delivered this stat line:

    12/21 (57.1%) 87 passing yards (4.1 yards/attempt) 0 touchdowns 2 interceptions (a 9.5 INT% is downright gross) 27.4 passer rating 19.3 QBR (ranked 20th of 21 quarterbacks through Sunday’s noon slate)

    More from Tyson Bagent:

“Obviously, you definitely would not want to be benched. Especially in a game like this, especially with the opportunity that I’ve been blessed with, but at the end of the game, these things happen. I gotta play better. And like I said, gotta look in the mirror, gotta see where I can continue to get better because there’s a lot of things still — even this far into my career — that I can certainly get better.

Part of me feels bad for Bagent after hearing this. But if I feel bad, I can’t even begin imagining what Bagent feels. That bit of postgame commentary made me feel like he knew he let a golden opportunity slip through his fingers.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Tyson Bagent to showcase his skills to any QB-needy teams around the NFL. With a good head coach, a capable offensive line, explosive pass-catching weapons, and the league’s best running game, there’s simply no better situation for a backup quarterback to be in. But instead of taking advantage, Bagent flopped. That’s gotta sting.

I want to be clear. This isn’t to say that he can’t go on to have a successful career as a backup. The league’s list of backup quarterbacks with athletic limitations rivals a CVS receipt. But the list of QB2s with subpar arm talent and questionable processing and decision-making skills simply doesn’t exist. For all the talk about what Williams could have learned from watching Keenum, Bagent is the quarterback who needs to soak in everything they can from the wily vet. The time is now to be honest about who Bagent is, not imagine what he could be in a reality that doesn’t exist.

Moving forward, I don’t want to hear about Tyson Bagent being a viable quarterback option for this team again. And I definitely don’t want to see anyone talk sideways about Caleb Williams. The Bears are two very different teams when Williams is in the lineup and when he isn’t. Bagent entered this season with twice as many interceptions (6) as touchdowns (3) thrown in regular-season games. He’ll leave Week 5’s performance at Lambeau Field having thrown three times as many INTs (9) as TDs (3). I hope he can turn it around, because I have no interest in sorting through the rummage pile next offseason and cook up deep dives on backup quarterback options.

Tyson Bagent Falls Short vs. Packers In Week 5 (But…)

I wrote all of that to end with this quote from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson on the potential return of starting quarterback Caleb Williams:

Ben Johnson on when Caleb Williams (hamstring) can return: "He’s on track. We’ll see if that’s Atlanta or after. I think it’s going to be close."

    — Chris Emma (@ChrisEmma1) October 11, 2026

I’m not sure what “it’s going to be close” means for Johnson. After all, Ozzy Trapilo has been “getting close” for the past few weeks but has yet to debut or even appear on the active game-day roster. So Williams getting “close” might not mean much for this week. But after watching two weeks’ worth of Tyson Bagent starts, the sooner Williams returns, the better the Bears will be.

As colleague Matt Rooney pointed out last week, Williams’ quick turnaround to play on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons — and then four days later against the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football — makes for a tricky situation. Logically, I struggle to convince myself that starting a recovering QB1 twice in five days makes sense. Maybe I’d come around to it with more information. Even if that happens, I’m still not sure I’d get there. But I am open to it.
