The idea that the Automated Balls and Strikes challenge system is going to constantly humiliate umpires is, to me, a ridiculous concern.
For one thing, we’re talking about hundreds of calls in a game, with upwards of 100 games per week, and 99.9% of the time, ABS doesn’t even factor into a pitch at all.
For another thing, many fans (most?) know how hard it is for the human eye to make a call within a fraction of an inch, so when an umpire gets it a little wrong, it’s not like that’s a moral failing.
For another thing, most overturned calls pass by without too much comment other than, cool, ok, the call is now correct. We’ve seen it so far in Cubs games. It just happens, and it’s not really been a big deal.
For still another thing, nearly half of challenges fail! The umpire is proven RIGHT!
So, yeah, that whole “it’s embarrassing for umpires” thing has not caught traction with me yet. But that said, yes, OK, sometimes the home plate umpire is going to be looking pretty darn bad when a call is reversed.
For example, last night, this happened:

— Underdog MLB (@UnderdogMLB) March 31, 2026Oof. That’s an “I must have sneezed” call, and exactly the kind where we do want ABS to be available to use.
Similarly, we know that even if a single missed call is very close, it can be a little embarrassing when a bunch stack up in quick succession:

— Talkin' Yanks (@TalkinYanks) March 31, 2026But these things stand out because, so far, they’ve been relatively rare. The novelty of ABS being what it is, everyone is on the lookout for these extreme cases, because it’s funny/interesting/crazy. It doesn’t mean this kind of wildness is happening all the time or becoming a problem. The system is working just fine so far.
