STANLEY, N.Y. — Rural companies in the Rochester area say they don’t have enough funding. As demand for its service keeps rising, Stanley Hall Gorham ambulance says it’s funding hasn’t kept pace.
Amanda Gibeau, the company’s director of operations, says one of the first steps toward a solution is for the state to designate Emergency Medical Services as essential.
“So in New York State, the essential services are fire and law enforcement, so they see mandatory funding where townships counties in the state don’t have to give us any funding,” Gibeau said.
Gibeau says getting that funding is critical to the future of EMS.
“Without it and without funding sources for all ambulance services across the state, we’re going to start to see a time in which we don’t have ambulances or we’re waiting a very long time to get an ambulance to somebody that’s in critical need,” Gibeau said.
Gibeau says Stanley Hall Gorham Ambulance is taking more calls than ever, but it’s much more expensive to operate.
“So the cost of everything is going up anywhere from diesel fuel to the cost of supplies medications, but prices are going up and reimbursement isn’t really going up,” she said.
Gibeau says the company has a budget deficit every year, making it harder to get new equipment. One of their ambulances is 19 years old.
“While we’ve taken very good care of it and it’s been a great ambulance for us unfortunately as it ages things come up and it starts to cost more to fix it then it’s worth,” Gibeau said.
Since it was founded, Stanley Hall Gorham Ambulance has survived mostly off donations. The company is now working with the town of Gorham and town of Seneca to possibly get funding through them.
Canandaigua Emergency Squad also told News10NBC it agrees their services should be considered essential.
