Illinois man with lengthy criminal history arrested in white-powder threats to members of Congress

Thirty-seven-year-old Matthew Unglesbee is in a familiar place: jail.

NBC 5 Investigates has tracked Unglesbee’s periodic criminal offenses back to 2009.

He’s been convicted of threatening a public official, impersonating police and sexually assaulting a minor, then violating the sex offender registration laws. Now, he’s facing his first federal charge after the FBI said he admitted sending threatening envelopes to four Illinois members of Congress, including northwest suburban Democrat Brad Schneider.

“With a return address in Quincy, Illinois, a postmark of Springfield, Illinois. We saw the letter in the pile of mail. In our mailbox, we shut the mailbox,” U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider of Illinois’ 10th Congressional District. “My team shut the mailbox and called the police.”

Downstate Quincy, on the west side of the state: the first clue in the case came from the Schneider interview last Wednesday with NBC Chicago – the sender’s name and hometown on these envelopes containing threats and white powder.

In Quincy on Sunday morning, the FBI moved on a house where Unglesbee was asleep – his mother’s house. They then took him into custody. According to a two-count criminal complaint filed against him on Monday, Unglesbee admitted to copying other white powder mailings sent recently to politicians across the U.S. and that he used table salt because he said it looked like anthrax and was certain would frighten recipients.

“I’m gonna have my mom post this video on her page…”

Unglesbee can be seen in numerous videos posted to his mother’s Facebook page. He rails against President Donald Trump, talks about the weather, daylight saving time and other topics – right up to the day before he was arrested.

“Let’s flip the House and the Senate Democrat,” Unglesbee said on video. “Make sure you vote in every single state where you’re at Democrat, so you can flip the House, and we can get all of Trump’s policies changed.”

That said, some of his alleged victims are Democrats.

But, court filings and arrest records obtained by NBC 5 Investigates paint a picture of a troubled and conflicted man, in and out of the criminal justice system, including serving jail time for threatening a local police chief, impersonating police and a child sex conviction that landed him on the sex offender registry – a case he also complains about on social media.

Now, he’s charged with mailing threatening communication and disseminating false information and hoaxes.

Federal agents said Unglesbee told then the letters and the white powder were a joke to him, but that he knew they wouldn’t be to people in congressional offices.
