In 2026, a member of country music royalty is bringing together two of the genre’s most acclaimed artists for an emotional tribute to the late Loretta Lynn.
Ana Cristina Cash, wife of John Carter Cash and daughter-in-law of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, announced Oct. 26 that Alison Krauss and Marty Stuart will appear on her forthcoming single “The Harpeth River.”
Cash co-wrote the song with her husband, who also produced the track. “The Harpeth River” will be released Friday, Nov. 6, on all major streaming platforms.
The song was written in memory of Lynn, who died in 2022 at age 90 and was a close friend of the Cash family.
“‘The Harpeth River’ was born as I strummed a melody on my guitar, surrounded by the Tennessee landscape near the river itself in Bellevue,” Cash said in a statement. “My husband, John Carter Cash, and I wrote the song in memory of our dear friend Loretta Lynn, reflecting on loss and cherished moments.”
The river provided an especially fitting setting for the tribute. As Cash pointed out, the Harpeth also winds through Hurricane Mills, Tenn., where Lynn made her home for decades.
Krauss and Stuart then helped transform the intimate song into a collaboration among several generations of country artists.
“What makes this release even more special is the heartfelt contribution of my friends, Alison Krauss and Marty Stuart,” Cash said. “Their voices added a layer of magic, and I’m truly honored to have them join me on this track.”
Stuart was similarly moved by the recording.
“Ana Cristina Cash’s recording of ‘The Harpeth River’ is a beautiful song,” he said. “It’s like a dream really. It was a privilege to play on it.”
The song’s imagery contains several personal references to Lynn, including a friend walking on in “a glittering dress” and the possibility of being reunited with her dressmaker, who could make her a new gown from the stars of the Milky Way.
The latter is a reference to designer Tim Cobb, another friend of Cash and her husband. Cobb designed many of Lynn’s famously elaborate stage gowns.
At the center of the song, however, is the Harpeth itself. The river becomes a witness to the lives and memories surrounding it, with the recurring refrain, “The river learns, the river writes / It writes the song that tells your life.”
Cash has also partnered with Tennessee Riverkeeper in conjunction with the release to raise awareness about protecting Tennessee’s waterways.
“John Carter and I are proud supporters of Tennessee Riverkeeper and believe deeply in its mission to protect our rivers and keep our waterways clean,” Cash said. “The Harpeth River is truly special to us, and we’re honored to help raise awareness about the importance of preserving these natural treasures.”
Ana Cristina Cash has spent more than a decade recording music in Nashville, much of it at the historic Cash Cabin studio. The Miami native began performing at age 6 on Univision’s Sábado Gigante and signed with Sony Music Latin at 15.
She has since performed with Lynn and appeared at venues including the Ryman Auditorium, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Grand Ole Opry. She made her official Opry debut in 2019.
“The Harpeth River,” featuring Alison Krauss and Marty Stuart, will be released Nov. 6.
