NFL Insiders Grade Bears Free Agency, Packers Coaching Changes, NFL vs. Refs, and Other Monday Bullets ...Middle East

Day 70 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Sunday turned into an impromptu food journey. I spent time on a 60-degree day walking 3.7 miles, which I used as an excuse to get a sweet treat and a milkshake from my favorite candy shop. And then, for dinner, I made some Cuban-style oven-baked wings. What a satisfying day.

Hey, we made it to the end of March! This feels like a good time to look back at what the Bears did in free agency through the lens of NFL experts, insiders, and pundits. Getting a little bit of national perspective never hurt anyone. Chicago’s football team earned “B” grades from CBS Sports, Pro Football Reference, and Yahoo! Sports. Over at Sporting News, a B-plus grade is handed out to the Bears for their offseason efforts. The best grades came from Pro Football Sports Network (A-minus) and NBC Sports. When you consider the holes still on this team that still need filling, getting this many passing grades is encouraging. Maybe this is just me seeing it through the lens of my inner child, but I feel like B grades are the equivalent of being satisfactory, but not as good as they could have been, which reflects what the team’s transactions log looks like as we wrap up March. The Bears upgraded the defense’s dynamic with an injection of speed and added some much-needed interior defensive line depth. But it did not land the big fish or add an impact starter on the defensive line. All in all, a “B” grade is good and accurate.

ESPN”s Ben Solak ranks the class 14th. And, in fairness, I get it. There is plenty to love about the Coby Bryant signing. Solak calls the newest starting safety “highly versatile” and underscores his tackling ability and on-field football instincts. But on the other hand, Solak has some reservations about the offensive line. Until the new center, Garrett Bradbury can prove that he can hold down the middle of the line, and the left tackle situation sorts itself out, questions around the O-line will persist. The highest marks come from ESPN’s Seth Walder, who gives the Bears an “A” grade for the DJ Moore trade. General Manager Ryan Poles netting a second-round pick feels like a steal. With two second-rounders to play with, Chicago has positioned itself to use the draft to add young, impact talent on rookie-scale contracts. This team, which OTC has at just $243,078 under the 2026 NFL salary cap, could use all the cost-controlled talent it can get its hands on in the team-building process. A first-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021, JTS was acquired by the Bears in a trade from the Browns. Chicago sent a sixth-round pick to Cleveland for Tryon-Shoyinka, who contributed 13 total tackles, one tackle-for-loss, and one quarterback hit in 111 snaps during his eight-game stint with the team after the trade. Speaking of the Browns, the team’s concerns about A.J. Epenesa’s physical have led to the agreement with the free-agent edge defender falling through. The one-year, $5 million agreement between Cleveland and the University of Iowa product is no more. This was fun to watch:

Headlines we should care about: “NFL Referees Association accuses NFL of spreading ‘false and misleading’ information” (Pro Football Talk) I didn’t realize how many coaching changes Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur made to his staff. Hiring a new defensive coordinator and special teams coach made headlines, but the team has a new receivers coach (who was with Christian Watson at North Dakota State) and gave Luke Getsy a new title (in addition to a new gig as the team’s QBs coach).
