Growing Pains, Nazar’s Busy Night, Toews at Wrigley, Frozen Four Set, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks are a bit of a hot mess right now. The good folks at JFresh have been cooking on that subject on the Twitters lately, pointing out that they’re riverboat gambling defensively right now to mixed results. Unfortunately, this is a by-product of the Blackhawks being not only the youngest (age) team in the league, but also by far the least experienced team in the NHL.

Consider the career NHL games played Blackhawks’ four centers (including last night):

Connor Bedard: 211 Frank Nazar: 114 Anton Frondell: 4 Sacha Boisvert: 3

The oldest of that group: Nazar, who turned 22 on Jan. 14. The Blackhawks stripped away a lot of the veteran leadership at the trade deadline, and I think we’re now seeing just how much fans took for granted just what those guys meant as rudders for this ship. We’re watching growing pains (without Kirk Cameron) right now. This is all a learning experience. And, frankly, riding losses into better draft lottery position isn’t the worst thing that could happen, either.

“I think our oldest center was 22 and our D could be playing in the NCAA Tournament right now,” Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said after the game. “They’re going to make some mistakes, and we’re going to have to be patient… It’s part of it, man. It’s part of where we’re at. We’ve got to keep grinding through and making sure, as we go through some of these frustrating moments where we gave up a lead late, that we’re learning. There’s nothing wrong with failure if you learn from it.”

It looks like we might get our share of lineup experimenting down the stretch, as the Blackhawks audition different combinations to see if anything clicks between now and exit interviews. Nazar skated with Ilya Mikheyev and André Burakovsky and liked playing with those two veterans. He had one of his busiest offensive games of the past couple weeks. Nazar had a 1.36 individual expected goals for (per Natural Stat Trick) and led the Blackhawks with 13 shot attempts, six individual scoring chances and four individual high danger chances. Bedard’s assist last night gave him a new career high with 68 points. I think it’s noteworthy that his 23 even strength goals are as many as he had scored in either of his first two seasons, and he has eight more games to reach his career best mark of 44 assists (he has 38 thru last night). This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but the last Blackhawks player to reach 70 points before their 21st birthday was Patrick Kane, who had exactly 70 points in the 2008-09 season. With his two assists last night — his first multi-point game in the NHL — Anton Frondell has four points (all assists) in his first four NHL games. The last Blackhawks skater to have four points in their first four games: Henri Jokiharju, who had five assists in his first four appearances in the 2018-19 season. I thought Kevin Korchinski was okay last night. He only got three shifts in the third period as the Blackhawks basically went to only four defensemen for the final 20 minutes. He was credited with one hit and one blocked shots in 12:09 on the ice. In the OHL playoffs on Sunday, Marek Vanacker had an assist on Brantford’s first goal of the afternoon. He scored into an empty net to close the books on a 4-2 Bulldogs win. In the NCAA, Adam Gajan stopped 23 of 27 as Minnesota-Duluth came up just short against top-seeded Michigan. The Frozen Four is now all set for a trip to Vegas. Michigan has both the men’s hockey team and men’s basketball team in the Final Fours of their respective tournaments after wins on Sunday.

    — NCAA Ice Hockey (@NCAAIceHockey) March 30, 2026 Yeah, I’m still scratching my head at the Golden Knights making a coaching change with eight games left in their regular season — while in a playoff spot. Absolutely wild. And, with all due respect, to throw Torts in there at this point feels like maybe the most extreme move possible? I know that division is a dumpster fire but this is shockingly aggressive. I’m sure somebody will make that about Mitch Marner, too. Regarding Cassidy, I’m not in any hurry to have the Blackhawks on their fourth head coach (including interim Anders Sorensen) in three years. I like where Blashill and his staff are going with a young group and don’t think changing again is going to help as much as some might want to believe. Come GREAT news from Rockford over the weekend.

    — Rockford IceHogs (@goicehogs) March 28, 2026 IIHF president Luc Tardif announced he will not be seeking re-election in October. He was elected as IIHF president in 2021. The Philadelphia Flyers signed forward Porter Martone to his three-year, entry-level contract. Martone, 19, was the Flyers’ first round pick (6th overall) in the 2025 NHL Draft and just completed what apparently will be his only season at Michigan State. Finally, the Winnipeg Jets have been in town for a while now waiting for the Blackhawks to come home. In fact, most of the team was at Wrigley Field yesterday — and Jonathan Toews received an appropriate hero’s welcome when he took the mound to throw out the first pitch. I’m sure he’ll get another loud ovation tomorrow night at the United Center.
