After playing a terrific game against an Islanders team that’s desperately trying to get into the playoffs on Tuesday night, the Blackhawks allowed the Flyers to shove them around the ice all night. The Flyers took the lead 48 seconds in — before Sacha Boisvert ever got on the ice. Philly added a second goal less than two minutes later; both goals came off ugly turnovers by the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks simply weren’t good enough in the first period.
The parade to the penalty box that ended the first period continued early in the second, which kept the Blackhawks from establishing any kind of flow. And, of course, the next goal was going to be important — and it came from the Flyers less than six minutes into the middle frame. The Hawks cut the lead to two… but held it there for only 90 seconds before the Flyers scored again. Philly took a 5-1 lead to the room after 40 minutes.
Even though they were chasing four coming into the third period, the Blackhawks didn’t generate much in the final 20 minutes. As assistant coach Michael Peca said during the second intermission interview, the “inexperienced” and “young team” excuses only go so far — especially after almost the same lineup beat the Islanders. Just not a good effort tonight.
Star 1: Connor Bedard
Bedard got the Blackhawks on the board, scoring his 30th goal of the season in the second period. In reading that benchmark, Bedard became the third player in Blackhawks history to score 30 goals in a season at age 20 or younger. The others: Jonathan Toews (34 in 2008-09) and Eric Daze (30 in 1995-96).

Frondell was credited with a team-leading four shot attempts at 5-on-5 in the first two periods. His backhand setup of Bedard’s goal was pretty, and made him just the fourth Blackhawk in the past 15 seasons to record a point in each of his first two NHL games. The early returns have been very exciting with Frondell and Bedard together.
Star 3: Frank Nazar
Not much on the rest of the roster stood out, honestly. But Nazar spent more than 90 seconds on the penalty kill and was the only Blackhawks skater to win better than 50 percent of his faceoffs (won 6 of 11).
