Cubs vs Nationals — We are here! Opening Day, 2026. And with that comes our first series preview of the season. This weekend at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs will host the Washington Nationals in a three-game series beginning today and concluding Sunday (with the always unwelcome off-day on Friday).
The Cubs will kick things off with Matthew Boyd, before going to Cade Horton and Shota Imanaga for games 2 and 3. The Nationals will counter with Cade Cavalli, Miles Mikolas (PCA homer incoming), and Jake Irvin.
If you’re late to the game, don’t miss some of our preview posts for this season:
Absolutely Everything You Need to Know About the 2026 Cubs 5 Bold Predictions for the 2026 Cubs Season The 2026 Cubs Roster is SetAs for the matchup, well, it’s baseball. So anyone can win on any day. That said, the Cubs are projected to be a much stronger team than the Nationals this year. Moreover, you gotta love the Cade Horton vs Miles Mikolas matchup on Saturday. That tilts Chicago, for sure.
And that’s not just because of Horton.
Remember, this Cubs team is plenty familiar with Mikolas from his time in St. Louis, and a lot of their players have had plenty of success against him in the past:
Ian Happ (46 ABs): .304/.333/.435 Nico Hoerner (39 ABs): .359/.359/.513; HR Michael Busch (15 ABs): .400/.438/1.000; 3 HRsBut no matchup is funnier than Pete Crow-Armstrong vs Miles Mikolas. Although PCA has taken just nine at-bats against the former Cardinal, he has seven hits, including FIVE homers and a double. Talk about having a guy’s number. Let’s see some more of that on Saturday, ay Pete?
On the pitching side, the Cubs are opening things up with their veteran staff leader, Matthew Boyd, who led the rotation last year. I’m sure you’ll recall that a fatigued Boyd struggled down the stretch last season, but he finished strong enough and should be rested and ready to go this year. He’s not going to be the Cubs’ best pitcher this year, but I thought his pick for Opening Day (a ceremonial decision in any case) was the right one.
Cade Horton has a huge season ahead of him and looks about as locked in as a player can be. And even Shota Imanaga, who also had a brutal second half, had a great spring training by the end of it. Beyond that, you can expect Daniel Palencia to close down the games as necessary.
All three games are at 1:20, and all three are on Marquee Sports Network/The Score (which has moved from 670 AM to 104.3 FM).
