Also, they need to one of them to play as a keeper too. If not, KKR may need to find space for Tejasvi Dahiya, who doesn’t have any IPL experience. Sunil Narine, meanwhile, is always a tempting option as an opener. Cameron Green, Rachin Ravindra and others add to the overseas puzzle.

And then there is Rahane, the captain, who will slot in somewhere at the top. So where does Raghuvanshi go?

Ideally, you’d want him at No. 3 after a knock like that. But fitting him there means pushing someone else out or reshuffling a combination that is still being figured out. Perhaps then, Green, the costliest overseas player ever in the IPL, will need to be pushed at number four. Then it is easy with Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell and Ramandeep Singh following up.

That’s the call KKR need to make before March 29, when they open against Mumbai Indians. Head coach Abhishek Nayar admitted recently that getting the combinations right is their biggest challenge.
