Time to stroll down happy Spring Training memory lane …
Knowing at the time that Dexter Fowler had recently agreed to terms with the Baltimore Orioles, per reports, I didn’t think it was necessarily a huge deal when I saw him walking onto the back fields at the Chicago Cubs’ Spring Training complex ten years ago today. I figured he was in the area for the start of Spring Training or a vacation or whatever, and simply wanted to say farewell to his beloved teammates.
But when you saw the reactions of the players, and you started to feel a swell of energy, that’s when you knew it was not a farewell. It was an “I’m coming back“.
It was one of the most enjoyable moments in recent Cubs memory, and one of the coolest sports things I’ve seen in person.
Just like that, the 2016 Chicago Cubs team felt so much more complete, and of course the rest was history.
