2026 World Aquatics World Cup #1 – Baku

October 1-3, 2026 Baku Aquatic Palace, Baku, Azerbaijan SCM (25 meters) Meet Central Results Psych Sheet How To Watch Day 2 Finals Heat Sheet

Day two of the first stop of the 2026 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup taking place in Baku brought us our first World-Record-equalling performance of the series.

Racing in the final of the men’s 100m freestyle tonight, and only a handful of events after his 50m back World Cup record, 22-year-old Egor Kornev of Russia busted out a time of 44.84 to take the gold.

Kornev’s time exactly matched the current World Record of 44.84 Australian Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers put on the books at the 2021 edition of the World Cup in Kazan. That time also stands as the World Cup record.

Entering this competition, Kornev’s fastest 100m freestyle result rested at the 44.99 he established in 2025, with that former PB representing his only other outing under the 45-second barrier. It came within .05 of the Russian record of 44.95 retired Olympian Vlad Morozov turned in during the 2018 World Cup, so Kornev now owns that standard as well.

Tonight, Kornev opened in 21.62 and brought it home in 23.22, which is a slightly different tactic than Chalmers, where the Aussie was .22 quicker to start out.

    Kornev’s 44.84 WR Chalmers’ 44.84 WR Kornev’s Previous 44.99 PB 21.62 21.40 21.50 23.22 23.44 23.49

Runner-up status this evening went to LCM 50 freestyle Olympic champion and World Record holder Cameron McEvoy of Australia, who registered 45.36 followed by Russian Vasilii Kukushkin, who bagged bronze in 46.77.

As for new father McEvoy, the 32-year-old 50m freestyle specialist has only begun training for the 100m as of August of last year.

He told World Aquatics he will be using each World Cup stop to test a different approach to the race.

“[There are] three different race strategies I’m testing out,” he explained.

“That’s going to give me so much data. Then I kind of cherry-pick all the good stuff, and then hopefully the Worlds is the best of the lot.

“I’ve seen many people who have a lot of top-end speed and they go out a little bit too hard and then that last 25 [metres] it hits,” he said.

“But in general I’m excited for it. I want to beat my PB from the past, 46.1. If I do that, I think that’d be good.” (World Aquatics)
