UNC Bears women’s basketball player writes her name into record books

University of Northern Colorado women’s basketball coach Kristen Mattio said if she were on a road trip with senior forward Aniah Hall, there would be music blaring in the vehicle and the women singing along.

“She just has that personality,” Mattio said this week. “I think you enjoy being around her. She connects with people. She’s very in tune with people. She just has the ability to be genuine and authentic.”

Maybe this is why the 22-year-old Hall received plenty of love on social media last week after reaching two significant statistical milestones. Hall went over 1,000 career points and 600 career rebounds in back-to-back Big Sky Conference home games.

Hall hit the heralded 1,000-career point mark Feb. 5 in a win over Weber State. Two days later, Hall’s two rebounds put her over 600 in a tough loss to Idaho State. UNC (17-8 overall, 8-4 Big Sky) has six regular-season games remaining before the conference tournament in early March.

The Bears are in fourth place in the conference standings with an 8-4 Big Sky record. UNC is 17-8 overall and travels to Sacramento State and Portland State for games Thursday night and Saturday afternoon. UNC beat both schools in the teams’ first games in mid-January.

Hall was the 24th player in UNC women’s basketball history to score 1,000 points. This includes the Division I and Division II years. She is one of 14 players all time to have at least 600 rebounds. Junior Tatum West reached the 500-career rebounding mark last month.

UNC women’s basketball shared on Instagram the word of Hall’s 1,000th career point. Hall reposted the team account’s graphic, featuring her in a celebratory pose with right arm flexed and mouth open. Hall’s post was then reposted more than a dozen times, including by former and current UNC athletes.

Hall then collected those reposts to create one long Instagram story of her own. She insisted she’s not exceptionally popular among UNC athletes, which might be tough to believe. Who wouldn’t want to sing on a road trip with friends?

Hall said she was touched to see those reposts, not only from other UNC athletes but also from people with whom she hasn’t had as much contact in recent years.

“It really just meant a lot to see all the people from different seasons of my life coming back to support me,” Hall said. “Super amazing, and I was basking in the love that I felt.”

One of the fans in the stands for a game last weekend was Hall’s older brother, Logan. Logan Hall, 25, is a defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League. The Halls are from Texas. Aniah went to Temple High School in Temple, Texas. Logan played at nearby Belton High School and then at the University of Houston.

Logan was the 33rd selection overall in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Buccaneers. He’s started 39 of 66 games for the Bucs, including 16 of 17 in 2025. Logan had a career-best 39 combined tackles last season, meaning assisted and solo tackles. He has 10 career sacks with a best of 5.5 in 2024.

Aniah said Logan has played an influential role for her as an athlete and a person.

“I’ve always looked up to him because of work ethic and how he approaches challenges that comes with being an athlete,” she wrote in an email. “He pushes me to be better and gives me advice when I need it.”

Aniah Hall’s story is easy to celebrate. Mattio rightly calls her 1,000 points and 600 rebounds “a body of work.” Hall’s college career started slowly because of injuries while playing high school basketball.

“It just shows her ability to deliver consistently over time, over, now a four-year window,” Mattio said. “From our side, there’s a reliability behind it that you know what you’re going to get.”

Hall suffered a patellar tendon injury in her left knee as a junior in high school. When she was a senior, she had a tear to the patellar tendon in her right knee. Hall finished the season before having an operation. She was still rehabilitating her right knee when she arrived at UNC in 2022.

Hall said she’s grateful for the scoring and rebounding milestones, adding they are a reflection of the coaches, teammates and family who have been behind her.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do it if I wasn’t playing with coaches and teammates that believed in me,” Hall said.

Mattio and assistant coach Camille Perkins recruited Hall to play for them at West Texas A&M, a Division II school in Canyon, Texas. Mattio was the head coach there before being hired at UNC in May 2021. Perkins was an assistant at West Texas A&M, and came with Mattio to UNC.

Hall said West Texas A&M was the first program to reach out to her and to show an interest in recruiting her to play college basketball. She received an email from Perkins early in her high school career. The relationship and connection grew, and the coaching staff continued to recruit Hall when they came to UNC.

Hall received interest from other Division I programs, but the relationship with Mattio and Perkins was cemented with their commitment to her. Mattio and Perkins are the main reasons Hall never left UNC to test her value in the transfer portal.

“I think they believed in me before I even truly believed in myself,” Hall said. “Over the years, the trust and relationships that we’ve built … the coaches have believed in me even when I was struggling on the court, and that just really goes a long way whenever you have people so invested in you.”
