CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs came close to dropping each of their first two series of the year, but they bounced back with a big win in the finale on Wednesday to bring themselves back up to .500. They have not gone over .500 yet, but with Cade Horton on the mound in Cleveland, today could be the day.

Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup as they get set to face their second straight left-handed starting pitcher.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

This Cubs lineup is identical to the group and order that started on Wednesday. Although, unlike Wednesday’s lefty starter, today’s bad guy, Joey Cantillo, actually carries reverse splits for his career, in large part because of his nasty changeup (I’ve got a clip of it below).

Nonetheless, the Cubs batters have split advantages of their own, and with Seiya Suzuki still out, this is the best group the Cubs can muster. I really can’t wait to get him back. His rehab assignment begins today, by the way. But I digress.

Bottom line, as expected, Nico Hoerner is leading off, Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong are moving way down, and Miguel Amaya is the DH, while Moises Ballsteros, Dylan Carlson, Michael Conforto, and Scott Kingery ride the bench.

Chicago Cubs: Cade Horton, RHP

Cade Horton’s first start of the year couldn’t have gone much better than it did. Not only did he look every bit as dominant as he did last season, but he was just as efficient. Horton needed just 75 pitches to deliver 6.1 innings of 2-run ball with one walk, four strikeouts, and a ridiculous 58% groundball rate. I don’t know about you, but I don’t need to see the big strikeout numbers we know he’s capable of to buy fully into this version of Horton.

He’s got great stuff and a great defense behind him. If he wants to keep pounding the strikezone, inducing weak contact, and leaning on his defense to stay uber-efficient, that’s just fine with me! And, hey, it wouldn’t hurt if the Cubs lineup could put up another 10 runs on the board.

Cleveland Guardians: Joey Cantillo, LHP

Joey Cantillo is a 26-year-old left-handed starter who began last season in the Guardians bullpen, before finishing the year with 13-straight starts. And they were GOOD ones: 2.96 ERA (3.21 FIP) with a 25.9% strikeout rate.

That said, his first start of the year was short and just so-so: 3.2 IP, 4H, 2ER, 3BB, 5K.

Cantillo works primarily off his low-velo four-seamer (92.3 MPH and 46.2% usage), but he mixes in a healthy amount of sliders, changeups, and curveballs, as well. Last year, his changeup was the big value pitch, especially against righties, which makes sense.
