For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Arizona senior state runner-up Ireland Gilligan has announced her commitment to swim for West Virginia University beginning in the fall of 2026. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue both my academic and athletic career at West Virginia University! I want to thank my family, friends, coaches, and teammates for their endless support throughout this process and for pushing me to be the best version of myself. I am so grateful for this opportunity ahead! GO MOUNTAINEERS!
A native of Scottsdale, Gilligan is in the midst of wrapping up her senior year at Horizon High School. She does not swim in high school competition, instead she trains year-round with Scottsdale Aquatic Club, where she specializes in breaststroke and IM.
Heading into the 2025-26 season, Gilligan owned personal bests of 1:04.67/2:19.64 in the 100/200 breast and 2:05.97/4:31.64 in the 200/400 IM. She first lowered some of those marks at the Arizona Senior Short Course State Championships in February, where she took the runner-up spot in the 100 breast (1:03.89), fourth in the 200 IM (2:07.50) and 400 IM (4:32.19), and sixth in the 200 breast (2:19.64), while also finishing second in the non-collegiate 50 breast (29.83). It was her best-ever placement at the meet after twice touching seventh in the 200 breast in addition to taking eighth in the 100 last season, her only other ‘A’ final appearances.
A few weeks later, Gilligan lined up behind the blocks at the Four Corners Speedo Sectional Championships in Carmel. Competing in both primary and off-events alike, she finished 22nd in the 100 breast (1:04.44) and 200 breast (2:17.92), 23rd in the 200 IM (2:07.44), 33rd in the 400 IM (4:29.74), and 145th in the 50 free (25.58), with her times in the 200 breast and 400 IM her current career bests.
Top SCY Times:
100 Breaststroke: 1:03.89 200 Breaststroke: 2:17.92 200 IM: 2:05.31A Division I program, West Virginia competes in the Big 12 Conference, with the women’s team finishing 10th out of 10 teams at the conference championships a few weeks ago. To earn a second swim at the meet, it took times of 1:03.08/2:17.31 in the 100/200 breast and 2:03.25/4:25.17 in the 200 IM, putting Gilligan outside the cutoff in each of her top events.
On the team’s projected 2026-27 depth chart, factoring in graduations and other recruits, Gilligan is slated to rank fourth in the 100 breast and 200 IM and fifth in the 200 breast and 400 IM. Her addition adds depth to a young roster that recorded just one scoring breaststroke swim and two scoring IM performances at Big 12s.
Joining Gilligan in the pool in the fall will be Maggie Wright (back), Evelyn Quick (sprint free/fly), Scoutyn Jackson (sprint free/back), Taylor Clements (sprint free/fly), Abby Hill (distance free), Rowan Baglole (fly), Gabriella Marim (sprint free/breast), and Aivleen Walsh (IM/distance free). Marim holds similar times of 1:03.0/2:18.5 in the breaststrokes, while Walsh has been 2:05.1/4:19.3 in the IMs, giving Gilligan some strong training partners for all four years.
Ireland won’t be the only Gilligan in Morgantown next season, as her sister, MJ, is a current sophomore on the team.
