Santiago Trouet takes rebounding personally in ASU’s win over Oklahoma State

TEMPE — Santiago Trouet brought the energy head coach Bobby Hurley has been looking for on the boards, leading a balanced Arizona State to an 85-76 win over Oklahoma State on Tuesday.

It came after Hurley made fiery comments following Saturday’s loss to Colorado suggesting if ASU (13-12, 4-8 Big 12) can’t rebound at that point, it wouldn’t be able to over the final seven games.

His players showed how they took it to heart to beat the Cowboys (16-8, 4-7), especially in the case of Trouet’s 16 points (an ASU career high) and 10 rebounds.

“Personally, I took it personal when I heard him speak in the post(game) conference,” Trouet said following the home win. “I think (Allen Mukeba) did too and Massamba (Diop) did as well ’cause we outrebounded them … so that’s where that came from.”

The Sun Devils were +11 on the boards after entering the matchup -62 over 11 conference games (-5.5 per game). It led to a 24-4 advantage in second-chance points after nearly doubling Oklahoma State’s offensive boards (19-10).

“Looks like we figured out how to rebound,” Hurley joked. “Great job for the guys, the stuff we watched in film from the Colorado game and talked a lot about in practice, the guys really internalized focusing on rebounding the ball and did a very good job.”

Trouet added he doesn’t seek out Hurley’s postgame comments regularly, but there are times when people will bring it up to him: “Did you see what Bobby said?”

ASU led for more than 35 minutes and for the entire game after trailing 7-6 early. It didn’t get by without being pushed though, a gap of one point with 4:36 remaining and another of five in the final minute.

It used a balanced attack offensively to secure the win, this being the first time this season that six Sun Devils scored in double-figures.

Diop led the group with 17 points, and he notched his ninth game with at least three blocks. Moe Odum (13), Noah Meeusen (12), Andrija Grbovic (11) and Pig Johnson (10) joined Diop and Trouet.

The Sun Devils took care of the ball to the tune of an 11-17 advantage in the turnover battle, and their own ball security helped keep Oklahoma State from getting out in transition to the level it normally does.

“Turning them (over) 17 times was big for us because we didn’t shoot it great,” Hurley said. “Certainly our activity was good. Noah Meeusen was really good down the stretch … he had some sneaky good deflections and steals in key moments. He was very active on the defensive end.”

Diop was also crucial to an improved defensive performance, as the Sun Devils held a 27th-ranked scoring offense in the nation to just 10 points through the first 9:45 and nine points below their average for the game.

ASU entered the night giving up 84.1 points per game in conference play, on track for worst mark of Hurley’s tenure (81.4 in 2016-17 was previous worst).

ASU had nine players available to start, but that became eight when Bryce Ford left with an injury late in the first half and did not return. Hurley said the injury is affecting the hip flexor, groin and “multiple muscles interconnected in there.”

Trevor Best was available but did not play, making it a seven-man rotation in the second half.

The Sun Devils face the No. 16 Texas Tech Red Raiders on Feb. 17 at Desert Financial Arena. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. on ESPN2 and the game can be heard on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
