Quinton de Kock set to break MS Dhoni’s iconic T20 World Cup record in SA vs AFG match

Quinton de Kock is on the verge of moving past one of the most important records in T20 World Cup history. During South Africa’s opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 against Canada, the left-hander drew level with MS Dhoni for the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in the tournament.

Playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, de Kock completed two catches behind the stumps to reach 32 dismissals, the same number Dhoni finished his T20 World Cup career with. The record is now jointly held, but de Kock has the chance to go clear when South Africa face Afghanistan on February 11 at the same venue.

Both of de Kock’s dismissals against Canada came in the powerplay. Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi found the edge of openers Dilpreet Bajwa and Yuvraj Samra, with de Kock safely pouching both chances. That second catch brought him level with Dhoni, who achieved his 32 dismissals across 32 T20 World Cup matches. De Kock, meanwhile, has reached the mark in 28 games.

De Kock’s tally includes 25 catches and seven stumpings, and he now needs just one more dismissal to become the most successful wicketkeeper in T20 World Cup history. With Afghanistan next up, opportunities are likely to come his way. This is QDK’s sixth T20 World Cup campaign, having played his first in 2014. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni also played six in total. He led India to a successful campaign in the inaugural season in 2007, and his last match was the semi-final against the West Indies in 2016.

Beyond this, Quinton is the only wicketkeeper in men’s T20Is with over 100 dismissals, having taken 110 in 103 matches. In comparison, England’s Jos Buttler has 93 dismissals, while Dhoni finished with 91.

De Kock continues to contribute with the bat as well. He scored 25 off 22 balls against Canada and remains South Africa’s leading run-scorer in T20Is, with 2,939 runs at an average of 31.60 and a strike rate of 142.39. In T20 World Cups alone, he has scored 678 runs. If he get those 61 runs, the Mumbai Indians opener can also become the first South African to score 3000 T20I runs.
