With girls state swimming and diving meets taking place this week and regional wrestling tournaments this weekend, many local athletes are gearing up for the postseason.
Meanwhile, local basketball players are looking to finish their regular seasons strongly over the next couple weeks.
Here’s a look at the top performances and most noteworthy happenings within the local prep sports season this past week:
Athletes of the week
Reagan Annabelle, Windsor girls swimming and diving
Annabelle, a senior, continued her season-long stretch of first-place finishes, winning the one-meter diving event during the Northern Conference Championships on Thursday at the Mountain View Aquatic Center. She recorded a score of 501, easily topping Greeley West’s runner-up Hope Kayl (447.7).
Sophia Carbajal, Northridge girls basketball
Carbajal, a junior, continues to break new ground. She scored a career-high 44 points on 18-of-25 shooting in the Grizzlies’ 67-44 home win against Wellington on Thursday. She also had 13 rebounds and six steals. Her previous career-high in scoring was 39.

Hollier, a senior, was dominant in the Rough Riders’ 64-46 home win against Northridge and their 57-39 road win against Greeley Central. Between the two games, she averaged 27 points on 44% shooting along with eight rebounds and two steals per game.
Brooks Reckard, Roosevelt boys basketball
Reckard, a senior, was instrumental in helping Roosevelt go 3-0 this past week with wins against Northridge (82-45), Greeley Central (85-67) and Pueblo East (54-37). In the three games, he averaged 23 points on 64% shooting along with 9.7 rebounds and three assists per game.
Madden Smiley, Windsor boys basketball
Smiley, a senior, recorded his third 30-plus-point outing of the season and he did so with excellent efficiency in the Wizards’ 90-45 home win against Greeley West on Feb. 3. He finished with 32 points on 13-of-16 shooting to go with eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

Steinkamp, a junior, stuffed the stat sheet in the Reds’ 69-33 road win against Fort Morgan on Feb. 3. She had 34 points on 12-of-22 shooting to go with 10 rebounds, eight assists, six steals and four blocked shots.
Liviana White, Roosevelt girls swimming and diving
White, a sophomore, built plenty of momentum for the state meet, as she placed first in one-meter diving during the Longs Peak League Championships on Friday at Loveland. She recorded a total score of 474.65, topping Thompson Valley’s runner-up Marabelle Balliet (442.72).
Moments of the week
The Severance girls basketball team (7-11) showed some late-game mettle to narrowly hold on to a 65-62 overtime win on the road against a solid Berthoud squad (12-6) on Feb. 3. The Silver Knights led 43-31 after three quarters before the Spartans went on a 25-13 run in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Severance regrouped, outscoring Berthoud 9-6 in the extra period.
Junior Zoey Smith led the Silver Knights with 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting to go with 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Speaking of overtime wins, Fort Lupton’s boys (12-6) earned a big OT home win of their own on Saturday, 68-66 against Windsor Charter (14-4). The Bluedevils led 32-23 at halftime and 46-41. The Firebirds rallied with a 18-13 run in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Fort Lupton ultimately maintained the edge with a 9-7 advantage in the extra period.
Senior Joziyah Bernal scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting for the Bluedevils. Fellow Fort Lupton senior Javon Gonzales had 15 points, 16 assists and four steals.
By the numbers
The Severance boys basketball team entered Tuesday night’s road game against Thompson Valley having won eight consecutive games with a 15-3 overall record, 10-1 in 5A/4A Longs Peak League play. The Silver Knights are outscoring their opponents an average of 68-47 per game.
They’re second behind Palisade (17-2) in CHSAA’s latest 5A Selection and Seeding Index, which will be used in a couple weeks to set the postseason field. Perhaps most impressive, Severance is achieving all of this with a supremely balanced roster. Five players are each averaging eight or more points per game, with sophomore Christian Powell leading the way. Powell is averaging team-highs of 19 points and 3.1 assists per game to go with 1.7 steals per game.
