Greeley Creative District celebrates Phase 1 of Creative Arts Center

Since 2012, the Greeley Creative District has worked to cultivate the city’s art scene, providing opportunities and support for local musicians, visual artists and more.

On Saturday, those efforts took a big step forward with the opening of Phase 1 of the Greeley Creative Arts Center.

“We want it to be a space where everyone in Greeley finds a home, no matter where they are at in terms of their creative or financial journey,” Greeley Creative District Executive Director Becca Vaclavik said.

The new Greeley Creative Arts Center, 702 13th St., aims to offer a little bit of something for everyone who wants to create. Phase 1 includes a workshop for artists, a classroom that will host a wide array of classes and a gift shop where members can sell their creations.

“Right now we’re accepting registrations for our first few classes. They begin in February,” Vaclavik said. “We won’t necessarily have public hours right in the beginning, but we will immediately start offering classes to the public and immediately have members who are using the space.”

The first classes are based on the most popular results from a handful of surveys and focus groups the creative district commissioned last fall, Vaclavik said.

“We’ve also talked to a lot of other creative business spaces to say, ‘What are you offering?’ ” Vaclavik said. “So we are trying to offer things that are still needed and not oversaturate things.”

The space will also include a gallery featuring local artists that will rotate monthly, complete with a floor mural by University of Northern Colorado Media Arts and Graphic Design professor Samuel Dong Saul.

The opening Saturday welcomed hundreds, if not more, to the building that used to be the Allnutt Funeral and Cremation. The celebration featured live music, belly dancing and plenty of crafts. Attendees were also treated to cupcakes and popcorn from Mom’s Popcorn.

Kacie Atchison, who sits on the creative district board, is just as excited about the center’s opening as a local artist as she is as a part of the organization.

“Personally, I love a third space,” Atchison said. “I love being able to go to a place and set up with my things and just work. And the fact that there’s a space now that’s meant for that for creatives is amazing. It’s very different than a coffee shop or a brewery, where that’s fun, but it’s not the main purpose of the venue.”

Linde Thompson, director of Historic Greeley, a nonprofit that advocates for the preservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings in the city, is most excited to see such a beautiful old building repurposed with new life breathed into it.

“This is an important and significant building historically and architecturally,” Thompson said. “So I’m really excited to see this part of the project get done. It’s such an arts community, and we really look forward to another facility to showcase some of the artists in Greeley.”

The creative district will offer a variety of memberships, starting with a free membership that gives artists a year-long listing on the creative district’s website.

The first paid subscription, available to students over 18, people over 55 and those who have served in the military, is $31 per month. It includes access to the center’s tool library, a discount on classes and other events, a spot in the center’s gift shop to sell their art and more.

The standard individual membership costs $56 per month and includes the same amenities, as well as the opportunity to reserve a space in the center during each First Friday Arts Walk. From there, Vaclavik said, the price increases based on the needs of the individual or business.

“My goal is that this will be a resource for emerging artists,” Vaclavik said. “You graduate from Aims, you graduate from UNC and you want to stay in Greeley and begin working in Greeley, but you don’t have the upfront finances to have your own studio or to buy the equipment you need to work.”

Saturday was a milestone years in the making for the creative district. But it is far from the end of what they have planned at the creative arts center.

So what does the creative district have in mind for Phase 2 of the building?

“We’re still sort of figuring out what that area will be. We’ve talked about it being a special event space. We’ve also talked about it being a theater, so we have a lot of different options,” Vaclavik said. “Our next step is having our structural engineers come through and say, ‘This is your floor plan. This is what is necessary.’ Then we’ll figure out what we want to design and program in that space.”
