Nations Capital Swim Club’s Sunny Chen has announced her commitment to continue her academic and athletic career at Case Western Reserve University beginning in the fall of 2027.
Chen wrote the following to SwimSwam regarding her commitment.
I’m incredibly excited to continue my academic and athletic career at Case Western Reserve University. The pre-med opportunities are outstanding, and I’m especially looking forward to combining a biology major with the Applied AI minor at a school that’s truly at the forefront of innovation in AI. When I was there on my official visit, I immediately felt at home with the team and coaching staff, which made my decision even more meaningful. I’m so grateful to my family and coaches for their constant support in helping me reach this point. Go Spartans!
Chen hails from Potomac Valley, Virginia, and represents The Madeira School. Over the last three years, Chen has reached four championship finals at the VISAA State Championships. In February, she finished 4th in the 100 fly (56.76) and added a 5th-place finish in the 100 free (52.78) at those championships, both marking personal bests.
Chen primarily specializes in freestyle and butterfly, boasting best times in the 200 free and 200 fly of 1:56.24 and 2:07.14, respectively.
In March, Chen raced at the NCSA Spring Championships, finishing 80th in the 200 fly (2:10.35), 99th in the 100 fly (57.61), 101st in the 100 free (53.20), and placing 154th in the 50 free (24.90).
She clocked her fastest-ever 50 free at the WMPSSDL Championships in January of this year in 24.75

50 Free – 24.75 100 Free – 52.78 200 Free – 1:56.24 100 Fly – 56.76 200 Fly – 2:07.14Case Western Reserve competes in the University Athletic Association in Division III. Last season, the women’s team finished 6th out of 8 teams at the UAA Championships.
Based on last season’s roster times, Chen would immediately fit in, ranking 2nd in the 100 fly and 200 fly and 3rd in both the 100 free and 200 free.
Chen is the first publicized commitment for Case Western Reserve’s 2027 recruiting class.
