Soon after his now-former coach, Fabrizio Antonelli, left to coach the Chinese open-water national team, Gregorio Paltrinieri has already found a new mentor in Germano Proietti.
Proietti will not only coach Paltrinieri, but will also head the distance and open-water groups at the Federal Training Center in Ostia.
According to a report from OA Sport, Proietti’s appointment follows a process to update the technical structure of the Italian national open-water team, overseen by a commission of several coaches of some of the team’s top athletes.
In a press release from the Italian Swimming Federation, Proietti said he is joining a well-established, decorated program and that he takes on the role “with deep respect”.
“I am entering an already established high-level program, backed by a solid working structure. To train champions of Gregorio Paltrinieri’s caliber on a daily basis, along with a group that combines experienced athletes and those with potential at the Federal Training Center in Ostia, is a great honor and a responsibility that I take on with deep respect.”
Proietti has served on several national team coaching staffs, including the 2019 European Junior Championships, the 2022 Mediterranean Games, and the 2023 World University Games.
He is also the current Technical Director of the Fiamme Oro Swim Team, having worked with several prominent talents such as Martina Caramignoli, Francesco Giordano, and Martina Cenci, among others.
“I thank the Italian Swimming Federation, President Paolo Barelli, Technical-Scientific Coordinator Marco Bonifazi, and the President of the Fiamme Oro Sports Groups, Francesco Montini, for their trust,” Proietti said in the press release. “I will give my full commitment to supporting the development of athletes who are already established while promoting the gradual integration of young talents.”
