Winter Juniors qualifier Ethan Hammontree has announced his verbal commitment to compete for Southern Methodist University beginning in the fall of 2026. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:

The Texas native is currently a senior at Midland Classical Academy, where he has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming and diving team since his junior year. A versatile threat in the pool, he also trains year-round with City of Midland Swim Team, excelling at IM, backstroke, and middle-distance freestyle.
Hammontree is the reigning Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) Division III State Champion in the 100 free (46.74) and 200 IM (1:51.50), having swept both events at the meet as a junior last February after finishing as the runner-up in the 200 free and 100 back as a sophomore.
He most recently competed at Winter Juniors West, his first time qualifying for the meet, where he set all of his current best times. He finished 19th in the 400 IM (3:53.75), 27th in the 200 back (1:47.69), 28th in the 200 IM (1:49.20), and 52nd in the 200 free (1:39.55).
The 2025 season marked a breakthrough year for the future Mustang. He entered the year with career bests of 1:53.27 in the 200 IM, 4:09.11 in the 400 IM, 1:51.76 in the 200 back, and 1:41.45 in the 200 free, meaning by year’s end he dropped more than 15 seconds in the 400 IM, over four seconds in both the 200 IM and 200 back, and nearly two seconds in the 200 free.

The Mustangs sent six athletes on to compete at the 2025 Division I Men’s NCAA Championships, where they finished 35th overall.
To earn a second swim at the 2025 ACC Championships, it took times 1:44.70/3:47.80 in the 200/400 IM, 1:42.64 in the 200 back, and 1:34.411 in the 200 free, putting Hammontree outside the cutoff in each of his top events.
On the team’s current depth chart, Hammontree would rank third in the 400 IM, fifth in the 200 back, seventh in the 200 IM, and 14th in the 200 free, contributing some added depth. With all of the swimmers currently ahead of him returning next season, he will join a competitive roster that should push his development over his four years at SMU.
Hammontree joins Danny Park (middle-distance free), Carter Hadley (sprint free/back), Able Temiz (sprint free), Josh Heydt (sprint free/fly/back), and Mark Heffern (fly/IM) in committing to the Mustangs’ class of 2030. Heffern should be a valuable training partner in the IMs, as he owns nearly identical lifetime bests of 1:49.33 and 3:54.57.
