Fernando Alonso took center stage as Aston Martin’s new AMR26 finally hit the track in Barcelona, completing 61 laps on the final day of the week’s shakedown after the team’s delayed arrival and a sluggish start.
The AMR26’s debut late on Thursday with Lance Stroll at the wheel ended quickly, raising questions about the team’s readiness under Adrian Newey’s new technical structure.
Adding to the challenge, Aston Martin had to adapt to a newly established Honda power unit partnership and build its own gearbox after years of relying on Mercedes.
Yet these hurdles also offered opportunity, allowing the designers to optimize suspension and chassis layout without legacy constraints.
On Friday, all eyes were on Alonso to provide the first meaningful test of the car.
“It was good,” the Spaniard reflected. “Definitely excited to be back in the car after the winter and for us it's the first day.
“I know some of the teams did filming days as shakedowns at the beginning of January and then the whole week here in Barcelona – but for us it was really the very first day so I think we had a positive one.
“60-plus laps and the car is responding well so first day and more to come.”
A Newey-Inspired Focus
Newey’s exacting approach was evident throughout the garage, his presence energizing the mechanics and drivers alike.
“I think everyone is super motivated when we see him in the garage taking care of all the details,” Alonso said.
“I see all the mechanics, the faces, everyone is looking at him – trying to spot something that maybe he commented about the car or he wants to improve. He's always teaching us something.”

Alonso’s productive session, combined with the team’s careful approach, gave a first glimpse of the AMR26’s potential.
Despite a delayed start, the car showed early promise, suggesting that Aston Martin may have laid the groundwork for a competitive season under Newey’s watchful eye.
