It sounds like the Atlanta Falcons are getting closer to hiring a new general manager.
And Ian Cunningham remains in the running for the position:

— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) January 27, 2026ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Chicago’s assistant general manager is getting yet another interview with Atlanta. This will be his second in-person interview with the team and third overall. As Fowler points out above, Cunningham was a finalist for the Falcons president of football position that ultimately went to Matt Ryan.
What’s next for Ian Cunningham and the Falcons?
In addition to having Ian Cunningham in for an in-person interview, the Falcons will also have James Liipfert for another conversation. Liipfert is the assistant general manager for the Houston Texans and is presumed to be a finalist for the GM gig in Atlanta.
It seems like the Falcons have an idea of who they want to hire. So, at this point, it feels like all Atlanta has to do is lock in and stick the landing with their preferred candidate. Of course, this franchise doesn’t have a great history when it comes to wrapping things up in a tidy manner on the football field. Perhaps things will be different when it comes to hiring a football executive to work with President of Football Matt Ryan and Head Coach Kevin Stefanski.

Ian Cunningham’s involvement in this search has me with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I like that a Bears front office member has garnered enough respect to find themselves as a finalist for a promotion. At a human level, I like seeing people succeed and move up the ladder. But on the other hand, I don’t love the idea of GM Ryan Poles losing a trusted member of his front office. Cunningham has been Poles’ right-hand man since 2022. I’m sure Poles has an idea of who he would want to replace his running-mate. And while that is fine and dandy, I liked the continuity that was building at Halas Hall.
In the end, there is a part of me that is rooting for Cunningham to get the new gig. He was pretty open about how much it “hurt” to get passed over for general manager jobs in previous hiring cycles. So while this particular position might not come with the responsibilities that other GMs get with their jobs, it still is a step up to another level. At the end of the day, I’m just hoping for a conclusion that makes everyone happy.
