Egypt said on Sunday, January 25, 2026, it fully supports the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and other humanitarian organizations operating in the occupied Palestinian territories, stressing the vital role they play in providing essential services to Palestinian refugees and civilians.
In a statement, the foreign ministry condemned the Israeli occupation forces’ demolition of an UNRWA facility in the occupied East Jerusalem, calling the move a flagrant violation of international law and international legitimacy resolutions, and an unacceptable infringement of the immunity and property of United Nations institutions.
Egypt expressed deep concern over Israel’s unprecedented restrictions and abuses targeting humanitarian agencies, which it said were undermining their ability to carry out their duties and negatively affecting the delivery of aid and humanitarian services. It said such actions constituted a clear breach of international humanitarian law and the rules protecting UN institutions and humanitarian workers.
The statement said UNRWA plays a central and irreplaceable role as the UN body mandated to provide education, health and relief services to millions of Palestinian refugees, adding that any attempts to undermine the agency’s presence or reduce its role would directly harm refugee rights and amount to shirking the international community’s responsibility towards them.
Egypt said UNRWA’s existence is closely linked to the Palestinian cause itself and to the historic international commitment to the refugee issue until a just and lasting solution is reached, including guaranteeing Palestinian refugees’ right of return in line with UN General Assembly Resolution 194 and related international resolutions.
Cairo urged the international community to meet its legal and moral responsibilities by ensuring the protection of humanitarian institutions and their staff, creating conditions that allow them to operate without obstruction and preventing any measures that could undermine UNRWA’s mandate.
Egypt also reaffirmed its full and steadfast support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to the establishment of an independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, saying this was the only path to a just and lasting peace in the region.
