Olympic sports took center stage in UA athletics this week as gymnastics, swim and dive, tennis and track all had excellent weeks. Check out the winners of the week in Alabama athletics for Jan. 18-24.
Gymnastics
The No. 3 ranked Alabama gymnastics team hosted No. 7 Missouri Friday night in front of a crowded Coleman Coliseum. Fans were treated to a show in the first home meet of the year as the Crimson Tide notched a season-high 197.500, defeating the Tigers, who scored 197.225.
“It’s great to see that we had a season-high score but honestly, it didn’t feel like that in moments, because I think this team’s ceiling is so incredibly high,” head coach Ashley Johnston said. “I think they earned every half-tenth out there tonight.”
Crimson Tide gymnasts picked up four total event titles in the victory. Freshman Jasmine Cawley won vault with a 9.925, while junior Chloe LaCoursiere clinched the uneven bars title with a 9.975. Senior Gabby Gladieux won on the floor with a 9.975 and then claimed the all-around title with a 39.575.
“Overall, incredibly proud of this group for continuing to stay present, focusing on the moment in front of them and chipping away all throughout the night, never getting too caught up in what’s going on. That’s another great building block for this season and we’re excited to keep it going,” Johnston said.
Swim and dive
The men’s and women’s swim and dive teams traveled to College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies in the team’s second-to-last meet of the regular season.
The 16th-ranked men toppled the Aggies, 158.5-141.5, while the 14th-ranked women took down their 24th-ranked opponents, 169-131, completing the sweep.
“I’m proud of our team today,” head coach Margo Geer said. “To go on the road and compete in a new environment and get the win takes mental strength and resilience. We had a lot of athletes step up. I’m proud of the direction we are heading, and I’m excited to see how we continue to develop as we head into our last regular-season competition next weekend against Auburn.”
Women’s tennis
For the first time since 2022, the Alabama women’s tennis team opened the season 4-0 after a 4-0 blanking of Georgia State on Saturday.
“We started off a bit cautiously in doubles, but the players did a good job maintaining the right intensity and energy for singles play. We are improving as a team with each match,” head coach Jonatan Berhane said.
Addison Bowman clinched the match for Alabama, defeating Georgia State’s Sveva Bernardi, 6-0, 6-1.
Katelyn Adel
Alabama multi-athlete Katelyn Adel made her pentathlon debut during the Orange and Purple Invitational hosted by Clemson University, which wrapped up on Friday.
Adel accumulated an NCAA-leading 4,154 points, moving her to second all-time at Alabama. The overall victory for Adel was highlighted by three consecutive PR performances in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and shot put.
Mouatez Sikiou
Also making an impact at the Orange and Purple Invitational was 400-meter runner Mouatez Sikiou, who finished second in the 400 with a time of 45.82.
That mark was good enough for No. 5 all-time at Alabama and set an Algerian national record.
