ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WHEC) – The Buffalo Bills named six captains for the 2026 season: Josh Allen, Dawson Knox, Bradley Chubb, Terrel Bernard, Reid Ferguson, and Sam Franklin Jr.
For most of those guys, it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. Allen and Bernard have been captains for a couple of seasons together. Chubb was a captain before signing with Buffalo this offseason. For Ferguson, it makes sense, considering he’s the longest tenured player on the team.
For Knox, it also makes sense, although it may be surprising that this is his first time being a captain of the team.
“It’s a cool thing. I never thought about what it would feel like to have it or what it would feel like to not have it,” said Knox. “It’s not gonna change anything about how I carry myself on a day-to-day basis.
Head coach Joe Brady even went as far as to say that despite not being named a captain in the past, Knox has already acted like it for years.
“Dawson’s been a captain here regardless of whether he’s had a ‘C’ on his chest,” said Brady. “A guy like him is a guy that you want if a coach isn’t in the room, he’s gonna set the standard.
But the player who may be taking his captaincy the deepest is special teams star Sam Franklin Jr. In August of 2025, Franklin was cut by the Denver Broncos. Buffalo picked him up for the practice squad, and he very quickly worked his way up to making the active roster. One year later and Franklin is now a captain of the Bills.
“It was a hard rough time for me last year,” said Franklin. “It showed people that I still belong here, so I just gotta thank God and the hard work that I put in.
Of course, being named a captain is a big deal and says a lot about the character and hard work of those guys. But it will take all 53 men on the active roster, plus coaches and practice squad players, if the Buffalo Bills want to have a successful season.
Everything starts up on Sunday, Sept. 13 in week 1 at the Houston Texans.
