Iconic Happy Days star Henry Winkler has been a working actor for more than fifty years, and has no interest in slowing down.
During the Wednesday, September 9, episode of In Depth With Graham Bensinger, Winkler, 80, revealed the real reason he refuses to retire.
“I was talking to your daughter Zoe yesterday. She said, ‘Honestly, I think my dad believes that if he stops working, he will die,'” Bensinger told the Night Shift star.
According to Winkler, however, it’s less about dying and more about slowing down.
“I think I have thought, not about dying necessarily, because I really love being on this Earth. I think about withering,” Winkler said. “I think about just dehydrating into a prune. I think I would just wither in the fall in the dark in a cemetery on a tree, the last leaf blowing.”
Winkler, who got his first big break on the 1970s sitcom as Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli, said, “I love my job.”
“I’m just in heaven when I’m working,” he added.
Over the next five decades, Winkler—who turns 81 in October—went on to star in iconic films such as The Waterboy, and Scream, and televisions shows like Barry and Arrested Development. Winkler has won three Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards throughout his storied career.
