According to Francys Romero, the Chicago Cubs are signing another reclamation pitcher, bringing in righty Yacksel Rios on a minor league deal.
The 32-year-old reliever spent parts of the 2017-21, and 2023 seasons in the big leagues, pitching for the Phillies, Pirates, Mariners, Red Sox, and A’s, flashing big stuff without much in the way of results (6.32 career ERA, 5.61 career FIP, but only 98.1 big league innings). Yacksel Rios has also been in the Rays, White Sox, and Braves’ systems, and spent parts of the last two seasons in the Mets’ minor league system, while also pitching in the Puerto Rican Winter League (where he was especially dominant this offseason).
Back when he was in the big leagues, Rios featured a 97 mph cut-ride fastball of the type the Cubs really love, so I’d imagine that’s part of what they’re hoping they can work with.
Yacksel Rios joins a large array of other relievers with past big league experience that the Cubs have signed to minor league deals, hoping to coax out some performance this year: Charlie Barnes, Trent Thornton, Corbin Martin, Tyler Beede, Jeff Brigham, and Collin Snider. It’s a very strong group, as far as these types of deals go, which makes sense given the Cubs’ reputation.
Oh, also? Yacksel Rios at one time threw this bonkers pitch:
