A man who was arrested Wednesday in connection to stabbing his ex-girlfriend over a dozen times had threatened to kill her before during their relationship. She also identified him to police as the one who stabbed her.
David Anthony Rios, 48, was arrested on charges of criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of felony menacing, according to his arrest affidavit.
Rios stabbed the 44-year-old woman multiple times on Jan. 4 at her Greeley home in the 1200 block of 5th Street. She was taken to the hospital after the attack, and she told a Greeley police officer that Rios stabbed her, according to the affidavit. She had 15 stab wounds or lacerations and internal bleeding and needed to be intubated in the intensive care unit.
The woman’s family asked the police to not share details of her current condition for her privacy, according to a Greeley Police Department spokesperson.
Rios had arrived at the woman’s house to pick up his belongings, as they had recently ended their relationship, according to the affidavit. Her brother, 56, had stepped out of the house momentarily to take a call when he heard someone shout “You cheated on me” from inside, according to the affidavit. When he went back inside he saw Rios stabbing the woman several times with a serrated knife.
The brother tried to intervene and pull Rios off of the woman. She ran to a neighbor’s house while her brother fought with Rios, who then followed and continued to attack her on the neighbor’s porch. Rios fled the house and his car was found abandoned in the 1300 block of 4th Street.
The woman’s brother had five lacerations, mostly caused by trying to get the knife away from Rios. He told officers he thought Rios was going to stab and kill him, according to the affidavit.
Officers spoke with the woman’s daughter and learned that the woman and Rios had been in an off-again-on-again relationship for four to five years, and he had threatened to kill the woman in the past.
At the house, officers found five knives missing from the knife block in the kitchen, with at least two knives on the kitchen floor and no other knives in the sink or waiting to be washed. Officers also found blood inside the home and leading to the neighbor’s house, according to the affidavit.
