Hardik Pandya’s successor Nitish Reddy gets more backing after India coach’s jibe, ‘time’ factor flagged

Former Indian cricketers Aakash Chopra and Robin Uthappa jumped to the defence of Nitish Kumar Reddy following India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate’s unimpressed remarks on the star. The all-rounder, who warmed the bench in the IND vs NZ 1st ODI, played on Sunday in Rajkot. While Doeschate blamed Reddy for throwing away an opportunity, Chopra and Uthappa have flagged the ‘game time’ factor as the reason behind his sub-par exhibition and not his form.

Nitish Reddy ‘gets limited chances’

Chopra claimed that it was difficult for any youngster to make an impact when there were limited opportunities. He pointed out that not only does Reddy bat at number 7 but also gets very limited chance to bowl. For the record, NKR made 20 runs with the bat and bowled just 2 overs in the IND vs NZ 2nd ODI.

“We make him bat at number seven, where he gets limited chances, and he bowls very few overs. If you don’t give opportunities, it becomes difficult for any young cricketer to make an impact unless you are an opener or a new-ball bowler,” Chopra said.

Doeschate had claimed that stated that India keeps picking Nitish, with the aim to develop him as Hardik Pandya’s future replacement, and he underperforms time and again.

“With Nitish, we keep talking about developing him and getting him game time. Then, when you do get him game time, he often ends up not doing a heck of a lot in the games,” he said.

Well, Uthappa too disagrees with the view, and has claimed that being an all-rounder isn’t easy and that Hardik Pandya & Ravindra Jadeja didn’t become reliable ones in quick fashion.

“Being an all-rounder is not easy. You have to master two skills. Ravindra Jadeja didn’t become what he is overnight, nor did Hardik Pandya. They became complete players because of the time they spent in international cricket. Nitish Reddy also needs that time,” Robin Uthappa told PTI Videos.
