Iconic Hollywood Landmark That Hosted Neil Young and Janis Joplin Destroyed in Fire

A historic Hollywood spot has been lost to a fire, according to People on January 6.

The Hollywood Center Motel hosted plenty of famous people and productions over the course of its 120 years. Sadly, a fire that broke out on January 4 has destroyed an iconic part of the property.

Over the years, the Hollywood Center Motel appeared in multiple productions. The Rockford Files filmed there, as did the 1997 movie L.A. Confidential. The motel was also shown in shows such as T.J. Hooker and Perry Mason.

According to IMDb, the property popped up on-screen as recently as 2009. An episode of NCIS was filmed there in 2008, and Southland shot there in 2009.

Rocker Neil Young and his band, Crazy Horse, spent quite a bit of time there over the years. According to a Facebook post by Vintage Los Angeles, Young and the band Buffalo Springfield rehearsed in a back house at the Hollywood Center Motel before their first tour.

In addition, Janis Joplin's band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, had rented rooms there while recording their debut album, shared Before the 101.

A statement published on January 4 by the Los Angeles Fire Department revealed that the fire broke out "in the early morning hours" of January 4. The hotel was no longer officially in use, and the two-story building had already been boarded up.

The fire was initially reported as a "rubbish fire," the statement indicated. Located on the 6700 block of Sunset Boulevard, the fire escalated quickly. Despite fighting the blaze for over an hour, firefighters were unable to save the building.

Firefighters rescued one person from the building after hearing someone call for help. A 42-year-old male broke a window and was led to safety. He was taken to the hospital, but he only had a minor arm injury.

In total, 70 firefighters from multiple companies worked to extinguish the fire.

The motel had recently been submitted for consideration as a landmark by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission.

A walkthrough of the property after the fire, done by Kim Cooper of the Esotouric tour company and posted on Instagram, revealed that the property's iconic pool survived the fire. Most of the bungalows, which were added to the property years after it was initially built, survived the blaze, as well.

The Hollywood Center Motel was built in 1905. In the 1950s, the property was expanded. According to the Los Angeles Times, the two-story Craftsman building had stood tall through two previous small fires in September and October, as well as earthquakes, riots, and floods over the years.

"It's a gut punch for Hollywood preservation," noted Brian Curran, a local historian. He added, "The real tragedy is that this building had been left vacant and it no longer had any kind of purpose, so it became a magnet for transients."

The motel was actively run until 2018, and it was foreclosed on in 2024.

The Facebook page Merch Motel shared photos of the Hollywood Center Motel from earlier days and wrote that it was "Another irreplaceable piece of Los Angeles history destroyed."

"This was one of the coolest sites to see in Hollywood. It was a look into the past and it's surrounded by new development and constant change," the caption continued.
