Bedard’s Shooting, Spellacy’s Wheels, Two for Boisvert, Kantserov Again, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks had a good nice in our nation’s capital last night, beating the Washington Capitals 3-2 in a (lengthy) shootout. With the win, the Hawks are now 3-1-1 in their last five games (three of which required a skills competition). And the Blackhawks remain undefeated in 2026.

But the Vegas Golden Knights were in Chicago for a Saturday practice and comfortable dinner. We know the Blackhawks have been bad in the second half of back-to-backs this season. Let’s see if they can put something together against a very good Vegas team that’s struggling right now.

Here’s a brief video of Connor Bedard skating in Chicago on Friday. Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said the timeline is still not written in stone for when he’ll be back, but it sounds like his shot was encouragingly good.

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 3, 2026 Ryan Donato became the third Blackhawk to reach double digits in the goal column last night, joining Bedard (19) and Tyler Bertuzzi (19). This move by Oliver Moore last night didn’t end with a goal being scored, but him doing this as early as he is in his NHL career is why so many scouts are high on his game. If he’s still in the “figuring things out” stage of his career but skates like this, the potential is exciting.

    — BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) January 4, 2026 Nice read here from Ben Pope on the Blackhawks’ only Olympian this year (so far): Teuvo Teräväinen. He scored for the third straight game last night.

Team Finland's Teuvo Teravainen, the Blackhawks' lone Olympian, is excited to fulfill a dream — well, pending one thing."I’m sure everybody is going to be so excited and the hockey is going to be great. Hopefully they get the rink done."New story: t.co/kVWkPY11VK

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 3, 2026 The World Junior Championship continues with the semifinals today in Minnesota. Blackhawks prospects Anton Frondell (Sweden) and Václav Nestrašil (Czechia) still have hopes of winning a gold medal. I shared their schedule for today.

    — Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) January 3, 2026 Corey Pronman and Scott Wheeler at The Athletic wrote their takeaways from the quarterfinals at the World Juniors. Here’s what Pronman wrote about Frondell:

Frondell scored twice and was named player of the game in Sweden’s quarterfinal win over Latvia. Instead of scoring off his great one-timer, he opened the game with a deflection on the first shift of the game and a wrister from the slot in the third. He was noticeable throughout the match with his skill and physicality. He’s been one of the best forwards so far in the event.

Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff also wrote about the standout players in Sweden’s win over Latvia on Friday. Here’s what he wrote about Frondell:

When Frondell is on his game, everyone else is in danger. Frondell scored twice in this game, including on a goal just 10 seconds into the game. He then made it 5-1 early in the third period to really put the game out while having a couple of other strong looks that nearly went in. Frondell has been Sweden’s best player in Minnesota, as expected.

    — Steven Ellis (@SEllisHockey) January 2, 2026 This was eye-opening for me. The IIHF shared the fastest skaters in the World Juniors on Saturday morning, and Blackhawks prospect AJ Spellacy was at the top of the list at 38.12 km/h — a full half km/h more than the next-fastest skater in the entire field. It wasn’t that he was that much faster than the rest of the players in the tournament that got my attention. I went to NHL EDGE and looked up the 2025-26 NHL season leaders in max skating speed and sorted by km/h. This top speed from Spellacy — who, as a reminder, is listed at 6-3 and 205 pounds — would rank ninth in the entire NHL this season… right ahead of Cale Makar! Wow!

    — IIHF (@IIHFHockey) January 3, 2026 Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov scored his KHL-leading 27th goal on Saturday. He added an assist and is closing on the top spot in points in the league as well.

    — Hockey News Hub (@HockeyNewsHub) January 3, 2026 In the college ranks, Boston University got back on the ice for the first time since the holiday break. And did Blackhawks prospect Sacha Boisvert ever start his new year strong! How about two power play goals? Boisvert was credited with nine shots on goal in the game.

    — Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) January 4, 2026 John Mustard had one assist and put five shots on net in a 5-1 Providence loss to Alaska Fairbanks. In the WHL, Nathan Behm had an assist on a Kamloops goal in the first period. He then scored a go-ahead power play goal just 19 seconds into the third period.

    — Kamloops Blazers (@blazerhockey) January 4, 2026 The Blackhawks re-assigned Dominic Toninato back to Rockford on Saturday. Good read here from Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff on ten prospects who are eligible for the 2026 NHL Draft and have performed well at the World Juniors. To me, the prospect who has improved his draft stock the most has been Sweden forward Viggo Björck. He isn’t big (listed at 5-10), which has caused some to question his ceiling at the NHL level. But, as Ellis writes, “his hockey IQ is off the charts.” He’s been really good in the tournament.

    — Daily Faceoff (@DailyFaceoff) January 3, 2026 Finally, Auston Matthews became the Maple Leafs’ all-time leading goal scorer last night. Congrats!
