September 19th – October 4th Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan LCM (50m) Meet CentralThe Asian Games may not mean much to the rest of the world, but for the nations of Japan, China, Singapore and beyond, the quadrennial multi-sport production carries significant weight and clout.
This year’s edition is no different, as the host city of Nagoya, Japan, is finalizing preparations for the competition, which begins next month.
South Korea is armed with the likes of world champion Hwang Sunwoo, Olympic medalist Kim Woomin and world-ranked Kim Youngbeom.
Four years ago in Hangzhou, South Korea achieved its best-ever result, reaping six gold medals, including the coveted first-ever top prize in the men’s 4x200m free relay.
As for 25-year-old Kim, the freestyle ace is ready to rumble, telling Chosun, “Although Asian athletes’ skills have improved, our players are particularly strong in big competitions. We will do our best to achieve the highest results again.”
23-year-old Olympic finalist Hwang echoed the sentiment, stating, “Ahead of this competition, I gained 10kg in weight and have been consistently doing strength training at night. My goal is to break my personal best record in the 200m.”
Hwang owns the Korean national 200m freestyle record at 1:43.92, which he produced at the Korean National Sports Festival last October.
South Korea is dispatching a delegation of 1,052 athletes to compete in 41 sports at these Asian Games. The primary goals are to win 45 gold medals and secure third place overall. At the Hangzhou Games, the country won 42 gold medals and finished third.
“I know we won a record total of medals in Hangzhou and I think we are capable of setting another record this time,” said Kim, who won three gold medals in 2023. “Asian swimmers have been improving but I am confident our swimmers are great under pressure.”
Hwang, who collected six medals in Hangzhou, including two gold medals, said he is hungry for more Asian Games glory.
“I will try to win a medal in every race that I enter. Obviously, we cannot let our guard down because Japanese and Chinese swimmers have been getting better, but I have faith in myself and my teammates.”
