Here are some you may have missed that deserve a mention – but certainly not a conclusive list.
Evan Gluck followed up his big PBs in the 1000 and 500 free by cracking 15:00 in the mile, taking 4th in 14:55.27. That marked a 14 second drop for the UNC commit, and he walks away from the meet with new bests of 4:23.5/8:56/14:55, having entered with times of 4:28.0/9:05/15:09. He was one of four men to crack 15 minutes last night, and was less than a second away from Whitaker Steward in 3rd. Ellis Crisci, the 1000 free champ and a 500 free ‘A’ finalist, took 2nd in 14:53.10 after dropping 19 seconds.
Rowyn Wilby dropped half a second in the girls’ 200 back in the morning to qualify 5th into the final in 1:56.82, and hacked another 1.5 seconds off to move up a place in the final, touching in 1:55.38. She came into this meet as the #13 seed, and after her two second drop she now moves up into the top 100 among 15-16 girls.
Benjamin Jaggers dropped three seconds from his 200 back entry time over the course of the day, moving up from #32 to make the boys’ ‘B’ final with a swim of 1:45.88. He took the win in 1:44.65, and has now hacked a chunk of time off both the 200 back and the 100 back, in which he was the overall winner in 46.18 last night. The Waterloo swimmer, who was part of a Meet Record-breaking relay on Night 1, set his previous best of 1:44.79 back in March of this year.
Avery Daigle won the girls’ 100 free ‘B’ final in 48.92, giving her a total improvement of 0.88 seconds over the course of the day. The 50 free runner-up was 49.65 in the heats, but moves up to 64th all-time in the 15-16 age group despite having a year still to go. Her time would have been quick enough to place 5th in the ‘A’ final.
Livermore Aqua Club’s Cade Vieler had an even bigger drop in the boys’ event, dropping from 45.53 to 43.75 as he placed 2nd in the ‘B’ final, hacking 1.78 seconds off his best yesterday. Brody Englestad dropped from 44.75 to 43.48 as he took 7th in the ‘A’ final for the West Fargo Flyers.
Max Laine of Waterloo Swimming, who like Jaggers was part of that record-breaking realy team, dropped over four seconds to win the ‘B’ final of the boys’ 200 breast in the 3rd-fastest time of the day. He was 1:58.73 this morning, dipping below 2:00 for the first time, and blew that away with a stunning 1:56.70 to win by over a second. He would have placed 3rd in the ‘A’ final, just 0.16 seconds behind Tyler Bardak who himself dropped 1.6 seconds.
Aidan Villars came into the boys’ 200 fly with a time of 1:49.01, but ended up placing 3rd in the ‘B’ final after a near three second drop as he touched in 1:46.27, but the biggest story in that event was Seattle Metropolitan Aquatic Club’s Charlie Cancelmo. The 16-year-old dropped from 1:45.03 to qualify 1st into the final in 1:42.51, but dropped even further in the final as he touched 2nd in 1:42.23.
He now ranks 5th all-time in the 15-16 Age Group, and is 0.16 seconds faster than current 200 fly World Short Course champ Ilya Kharun was at the same age. The four swimmers now ahead of Cancelmo indicate the rarefied air he now occupies – Thomas Heilman, Luca Urlando, AIden Hayes, and Michael Phelps.
