There was a tie for 9th in tonight’s women’s 50 breaststroke semi-finals, as Lithuania’s Kotryna Teterevkova and NAB’s Ralina Giliazova swam matching 30.55s, Giliazova in the first semi-final and Teterevkova in the second.
Both swimmers opted to race for the spot of first reserve, and the swim-off took place at the end of the finals session tonight after the medal ceremonies had wrapped up.
However, the two once again tied, this time in 30.43. That was the second lifetime best of the day for Teterevkova, while Giliazova’s best is a 30.34 from the Russian Championships in June.
That set them up for another swim-off, which will take place at the end of the prelims session tomorrow morning. The swim-off is scheduled for 11:24am local time.
While rare, ties in swim-offs do occur. There was a tie in a swim-off for the final spot in the ‘C’ final at U.S. Junior Nationals earlier this month between Camryn Siegers and Jane Garlock, which had been a three-way swim-off with Leah Inman after all three posted 57.20 in the heats.
Siegers and Garlock tied again in 56.91 in the swim-off, although there was not then a second swim-off with Siegers ending up swimming in the ‘D’ final.
Another three-way-tie-turned-to-two-way-tie occurred at the 2026 NCAA DIII Championships in the men’s 50 free, with Spencer Stluka, Cam Blevins-Mohr , and Casey Jacobs tying for 16th in the heats. Stluka and Blevins-Mohr then tied in the swim-off in 20.17. A second swim-off was won by Stluka in 20.08.
There was a double tie in the 100 breaststroke at the British Universities Championships in 2020, also swimming for first reserve. Ross Young and Lewis Waters posted identical times of 1:05.37 in their swim-off, and then had a second swim-off which started just four minutes and 12 seconds after they hit the wall in the first one. Young won the second swim-off in 1:09.24.
A more brutal double swim-off than the ones above came in the 500 free at the 2025 ACC Championships. Gustavo Saldo and Dillon Wright both tied for 24th in 4:20.80, then again in a time of 4:21.63. Wright then scratched, with Saldo finishing 4th in the ‘C’ final that evening in 4:16.94.
