Curtis will swim backstroke for Italy after lowering the 50 back world record twice en route to gold, moving over from her standard freestyle spot. The Dutch have Steenbergen not on the backstroke of freestyle legs, but swimming breaststroke this morning.
Curtis has never broken 1:00 in the 100 back but surely will this morning after clocking 26.56 in the 50 back, and Margherita Panziera’s national record of 58.92 could be in danger. Steenbergen is the #3 Dutch swimmer of all time in the 100 breast with a 1:07.90 from last May.
Great Britain go with Angharad Evans on breaststroke, which was always expected with no real alternative on that leg on the team. Theodora Taylor anchors, with Katie Shanahan leading off after finishing 7th in the individual final last night.
Mona McSharry swims breaststroke for Ireland, while France use last night’s 100 back bronze medalist Pauline Mahieu on backstroke as they rest European record holder Mary-Ambre Moluh.
Germany put out their strongest quartet this morning, featuring 2025 world champion Anna Elendt on breaststroke and 2024 world champion Angelina Kohler on butterfly. Neutral Athletes B also put out a strong team, with individual finalists Alina Gaifutdinova and Arina Surkova swimming.
